Workers brave the scorching sun to stay on the construction site of the North-South Expressway (Eastern section).

In early June 2026, Nghe An province experienced scorching hot weather, with temperatures consistently exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Despite the intense heat, workers at the large-scale construction site of the Than Vu Tunnel project (part of the Eastern North-South Expressway) continued to work diligently. At the southern construction site in Than Linh commune (Nghe An province), a group of workers from Bien Dong Consulting and Construction Joint Stock Company are busy pouring concrete for the bridge. Concrete pillars for the elevated bridge, tens of meters high, are gradually taking shape. According to the workers, to ensure their health during the hot weather, they have to change their working hours. Morning shifts start from 6 am to 10 am, and afternoon shifts end after 2 pm or later. In the scorching heat, the steel bars, tens of meters long and as thick as a wrist, absorbed the heat and became burning hot. Workers had to wear thick, double-layered gloves to avoid burning their hands.
On many days when the weather is too hot, the workers finish early and take advantage of working at night to avoid the heat. "Because of the heat, we have to constantly take breaks to drink water to cool down and avoid losing energy," said worker Tran Van Long.
The hardest work is done by the welders. The scorching sun above and the intense heat from the welding machines below make the air even more stifling. "Even with a mask and safety glasses, my face is always burning. It's hard work, but the income isn't high, only 500-600 thousand dong a day," said Ngan Thanh Tinh.
To protect the health of their workers, contractors have implemented various solutions to cope with the heat. Many workers have equipped themselves with air-conditioned jackets equipped with cooling fans. Sweat dripped down the faces of the workers who persevered on the massive construction site.
Engineer Le Xuan Son, a technical officer at Hoa Hiep Co., Ltd., said that the company currently maintains approximately 200 officers, engineers, and workers on the construction site. To date, the contractor has completed work worth over 70 billion VND, drilling 200 out of 313 piles, constructing 13 out of 29 bridge piers, and casting 36 girder segments. The company is simultaneously deploying four drilling operations, striving to complete all pile drilling work by August. Despite the scorching heat, the bridge and road construction workers silently persevered, exchanging sweat and strength for every meter of bridge, every girder, ensuring the project's progress. According to Mr. Ngo Trong Nghia, Project Director of the Than Vu Tunnel Project under the Railway Project Management Board ( Ministry of Construction ), the entire project has so far achieved a production value of nearly 228 billion VND, equivalent to about 18% of the contract value. Despite many difficulties regarding weather, materials, and labor, the contractors are making maximum efforts to ensure progress, quality, and labor safety.
