Ronaldo and his teammates continue their journey in the Nations League. |
Three out of the four second-leg quarter-final matches played early this morning (March 24) went into extra time, and two of them had to be decided by penalty shootouts.
Playing at home, Germany put on a spectacular first-half performance, scoring three goals. However, Italy fought back strongly and equalized 3-3 in the second leg. Nevertheless, the 1-2 defeat in the first leg shattered the "Azzurri's" dream of winning the Nations League. On the other side, joy came to the German players as they reached the UEFA Nations League semi-finals for the first time.
Portugal was the next team to qualify. Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates lost 0-1 in the first leg but showed their mettle with a 5-2 victory at home. CR7 missed a penalty but redeemed himself with a goal in the 72nd minute. Ronaldo is eager to win his third title at the national team level in his final appearance at the Nations League finals.
Another representative from the Iberian Peninsula, Spain, also qualified for the semi-finals after a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Netherlands in a penalty shootout. This was the most balanced and exciting match, with both teams drawing 2-2 and 3-3 in each leg. The Netherlands put in a good performance and only lacked a bit of luck to secure their place in the next round.
France was the last team to qualify for the top four of this season's UEFA Nations League. After a 0-2 defeat in the first leg, Michael Olise played the hero, helping France win 2-0 in the second leg. In the penalty shootout, Mike Maignan shone brightly with three saves from Croatian players, securing "Les Bleus'" qualification.
The two semi-final pairings have also been determined. France will face Spain, while Portugal will meet Germany. The UEFA Nations League semi-finals will take place in June.
