The Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway section near Hanoi's Ring Road 3. |
The Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi expressway will be expanded from 4 to 6 lanes.
The expressway is 110.5 km long, of which the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen section, 69.2 km long, currently operates with 4 lanes, but the roadbed and bridges have been built to accommodate 6 lanes. The Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi section, 41.3 km long, was invested in under the BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model and put into operation in 2017 with 2 lanes.
According to the national road network plan for the period 2021-2030, the route is planned to have 4-6 lanes, with the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen section expanded to 6 lanes and the Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi section to 4 lanes before 2030.
The feasibility study report for the complete Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi expressway construction project is being finalized and submitted to the Thai Nguyen Provincial People's Committee for consideration. Construction is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2026.
The project has a total investment of approximately 20,800 billion VND. Of this, the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen section has a design speed of 100 km/h, and the Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi section has a design speed of 80-100 km/h.
The Pháp Vân - Cầu Giẽ expressway is proposed to be expanded to 10 lanes.
The highway is approximately 29 km long, currently has 6 lanes, and has a traffic volume of about 85,000 vehicles per day and night, which is much higher than its designed capacity of about 55,400 vehicles per day and night.
The management unit of the Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway recently proposed to the Ministry of Construction to adjust the plan to expand the Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway from 10-12 lanes down to 8-10 lanes.
According to the investor's proposal, on the Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway, the Phap Van - Ring Road 4 section will be expanded to 10 lanes instead of the current 12 lanes, while the Ring Road 4 - Cau Gie section will have 8 lanes instead of 10 lanes.
Specifically, the Phap Van - Ring Road 4 section will have 4 elevated lanes added, while the Ring Road 4 - Cau Gie section will have 2 additional lanes at ground level to meet traffic demand and ensure investment efficiency.
The company stated that the planning adjustments were due to changes in the transportation network in southern Hanoi after many new projects were added to the plan. The consulting firm predicted that approximately 60-70% of traffic on the Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway could be diverted to new routes such as the expanded 16-lane National Highway 1, the Red River scenic boulevard, the Ngoc Hoi - Phu Xuyen axis, the southern Hanoi expressway, and the ring roads 3.5, 4, 4.5, and 5.
The Hanoi-Bac Giang expressway is being expanded to six lanes.
The Ministry of Construction and the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province have agreed on the principle of phased investment in expanding the Hanoi - Bac Giang expressway, initially upgrading it from 4 to 6 lanes under the PPP model, while also studying the possibility of assigning the locality to implement the project.
The expressway, over 45 km long, opened in 2016 and currently connects many large industrial zones through 16 interchanges. After nearly 10 years of operation, the volume of vehicles has increased sharply, causing frequent congestion and overload on the route.
According to the plan, the route will be expanded to 8 lanes. However, in the immediate phase, only 2 additional lanes will be added to reach 6 lanes, combined with the expansion and construction of several underpasses, investment in service roads, parallel roads, and infrastructure serving the local community.
According to preliminary calculations, the complete expansion to 8 lanes would require approximately 25,000 billion VND, while the expansion to 6 lanes along with related items would have a total investment of approximately 3,660 billion VND.
Currently, authorities are studying two investment options: expanding the entire route to over 45 km or expanding the 39.5 km section from the intersection with National Highway 31 to the Hanoi-Thai Nguyen Expressway interchange. The final option will be selected based on technical efficiency, financial viability, and feasibility.
The Hoa Binh - Moc Chau expressway is now expanded to 4 lanes.
The 32.2 km expressway project is currently under construction with a scale of 2 lanes, with land clearance completed for 4 lanes. By March 2026, the contractor had completed nearly 28 km of land clearance, aiming for completion in 2027. The total investment for the first phase is over 4,930 billion VND, and if the 4 lanes are fully completed, the total investment will increase to over 9,400 billion VND.
The People's Committee of Son La province recently requested the Government to allocate approximately 4,470 billion VND from the central budget for the period 2026-2030 to expand the Hoa Binh - Moc Chau expressway section passing through the province from 2 to 4 lanes as planned. The immediate expansion is considered to utilize already cleared land, reduce costs, improve traffic safety, and save over 200 billion VND. Since the project is currently underway, adjusting the scale will be easier than expanding it later.
The Hoa Binh - Moc Chau expressway, part of the Hanoi - Hoa Binh - Son La - Dien Bien expressway axis, plays a crucial role for the Northwest region.
Expanding 15 component projects of the North-South Expressway to 6 lanes.
The Ministry of Construction has recently sent a document to 11 provinces and cities to solicit feedback on the pre-feasibility study report for the project to expand sections of the North-South Expressway in the East during the 2026-2030 period.

According to the study plan, existing sections of the expressway with a limited 4 lanes and a 17-meter roadbed width will be expanded to 6 lanes, including an emergency stopping lane as planned. The pre-feasibility study documents have now been largely completed.
Fifteen sections of the route will be expanded, including: Mai Son - National Highway 45, National Highway 45 - Nghi Son, Nghi Son - Dien Chau, Bai Vot - Ham Nghi, Ham Nghi - Vung Ang, Vung Ang - Bung, Bung - Van Ninh, Van Ninh - Cam Lo, Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon, Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon, Quy Nhon - Chi Thanh, Chi Thanh - Van Phong, Van Phong - Nha Trang, Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet, and Phan Thiet - Dau Giay.
The Ministry of Construction plans to prioritize the expansion of sections with high traffic volume within the North-South Expressway project during the 2017-2020 period, aiming to commence construction in 2027. The remaining sections will be implemented from 2028, with the goal of completing the expansion of the entire route by 2030.
For the three existing PPP projects, namely Dien Chau - Bai Vot, Nha Trang - Cam Lam, and Cam Lam - Vinh Hao, the Ministry of Construction has assigned the Vietnam Road Administration to work with BOT investors to agree on expansion plans.
In a recent report submitted to the Government, the Ministry of Construction estimated the total capital needed to expand expressways to 2-lane and 4-lane standards according to the plan until 2030 to be approximately 500,000 billion VND, with funding already allocated to many projects.
