Data from Ericsson shows that in the first quarter of 2026, the world recorded an additional 162 million new 5G subscribers, bringing the total to 3.1 billion. This growth rate is projected to remain strong, reaching 6.4 billion subscribers by the end of 2031, accounting for more than half of the total global mobile subscribers.
Notably, in leading markets such as Western Europe, North America, and Northeast Asia, 5G subscriber rates are expected to reach or exceed 90% by 2031.
In terms of infrastructure, there are currently around 390 carriers offering commercial 5G services, of which more than 90 have deployed 5G Standalone (5G SA) networks. The transition to 5G SA is a key factor in enabling mobile networks to handle massive amounts of data.
A key highlight in the development of 5G during this period is the maturation of network slicing technology on the 5G SA platform. According to reports, the number of commercial services based on this technology has increased from 65 to 84 services globally.
Erik Ekudden, Chief Technology Officer of Ericsson, stated that in the era of physical AI, traffic patterns will fundamentally shift from being centralized in data centers to AI agents distributed across multiple devices and urban infrastructures, primarily connected via 5G. At that point, mobile networks will no longer simply provide "best effort" connectivity but will become essential smart infrastructure.
Although the telecommunications industry has begun discussions about 6G standards with an AI-native architecture, expected to be commercially deployed around 2030, the current 5G platform will still serve as the backbone for all smart connectivity for at least the next decade.
In Vietnam, Rita Mokbel, General Director of Ericsson Vietnam, noted that the country is experiencing rapid 5G adoption thanks to expanding coverage and the application of AI to enhance network performance. Ericsson is committed to collaborating to realize the potential of 5G as a platform to drive innovation and economic growth.
