6 things that annoy guests when booking a room.

Ben West, a British travel expert, was annoyed by the hotel's excessively high deposit requirements, late check-in times, and early check-out times.

Ben West, a British travel expert, spent two years checking into numerous hotels around the world . Below are some of the things he found most annoying about hotels.

Ignore the "do not disturb" request.

While lounging on a sun lounger on the patio of an expensive hotel room, listening to music with headphones on, Ben was unexpectedly tapped on the shoulder by the housekeeping staff who asked if he wanted his room cleaned. The male traveler was annoyed by the intrusion because he had hung a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the doorknob earlier.

"I paid for the hotel room, so the minimum I expect is privacy," Ben said.

Late check-in, early check-out

Normally, guests check in at 2 PM and check out at 12 PM the following day. But more and more hotels are shortening the time guests can stay in their rooms. Many places require Ben to check in at 4 PM and check out at 10 AM the next day. Two places that gave him this bad experience were in Rome, Italy, and New York, USA.

Ben agrees that hotels need time to clean rooms before handing them over to new guests. However, taking 5-6 hours to clean is unacceptable.

The deposit is too high.

Many 4- and 5-star hotels require guests to use a credit card as a deposit upon check-in, and this amount can be substantial. One hotel in New York required Ben to deposit $200 upon arrival.

Useless safe

Many hotels provide safes that are too small, only big enough to fit a passport or wallet and not big enough to store a laptop. In some cases, hotels even state that they are not responsible if guests lose items from the safe. This made Ben even more uneasy.

It's difficult to use the shower.

Many of the hotels Ben stayed in left him confused because he didn't know how to get hot or cold water for showering. The reason was that the signs explaining how to use the showerhead were too small or nonexistent. This often left the male traveler with cold showers or burned by sudden bursts of hot water.

Wi-Fi connection is complicated.

Many hotels allow guests to access the internet with just a click, but many others still require guests to manually enter a long password with numbers and symbols. Some hotels even charge guests for Wi-Fi access, while most offer it free of charge.

In addition, Ben also pointed out other factors that made many guests feel uncomfortable, such as the hotel room windows being impossible to open even when guests wanted to breathe fresh air, the lighting system being too complicated and time-consuming to turn off the lights before going to sleep. The kettle being too large for the sink, forcing guests to fill a cup and pour the water into the kettle, was also something he found annoying and deducted points from the hotel's rating.
