7 skincare tips for men

VnExpressVnExpress21/11/2023

For effective skincare, men should identify their skin type correctly, carefully read product labels, wash their face daily, pay attention when shaving, moisturize, and use sunscreen diligently.

According to Dr. Phan Ngoc Huy, Department of Aesthetic Dermatology, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital, the demand for skincare among men is increasing. However, men tend to follow simpler skincare routines and pay less attention to their distinct physiological characteristics.

Here are some tips suggested by Dr. Huy to help men take better care of their skin.

Determine your skin type

First, determine your skin type correctly:

- Sensitive skin: experiences a stinging or burning sensation after using skincare products.

- Normal skin: the most balanced skin type and the ideal, easiest skin type to care for.

- Dry skin: rough, itchy, and flaky.

- Oily skin: feels shiny and sticky.

- Combination skin: characterized by both dry and oily skin in different areas.

Identifying your skin type correctly is fundamental to effective skincare and choosing the right skincare products.

Read the product label.

Read product labels and ingredients carefully. If you have acne-prone skin, use products labeled "oil-free" or "non-comedogenic" to minimize clogged pores. Conversely, if you have sensitive skin, look for products labeled "fragrance-free," as these products do not contain fragrances or other ingredients that can easily irritate the skin.

However, be wary of products labeled "unscented," as they may contain hidden fragrances that could irritate your skin.

Wash one's face

Wash your face daily and after exercising. Use gentle cleansers with warm water. Avoid soap and hot water as they will over-dry your skin.

Pay attention to the shaving technique.

If you frequently experience ingrown hairs or razor cuts, use a single or double blade razor and avoid straining your skin while shaving.

Before shaving, wet your skin to soften the beard and use shaving cream, remembering to shave in the direction of hair growth.

Replace the razor blade after every 5-7 shaves to avoid skin irritation.

Keep skin moisturized.

Moisturizing helps retain water within the skin, thereby reducing fine wrinkles on the surface and making the skin look brighter and healthier. Use moisturizing products daily, right after showering or washing your face, while your skin is still slightly damp.

Regular skin checks

Moles that itch, bleed, or change color are early warning signs of skin cancer. Men over 50 are at higher risk of melanoma, so early detection is crucial for effective treatment.

Always use sunscreen when going outside.

Sunscreen is very effective in preventing sun-induced skin damage such as wrinkles, brown spots, and skin cancer. Apply sunscreen to your scalp, face, ears, neck, and lips.

Choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming.

However, the best protection is to find shade, wear long clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses whenever possible.
