Eight expressway projects will have their speed limit increased to 90 km/h.

The Ministry of Transport has agreed to increase the maximum speed limit from 80 to 90 km/h for eight four-lane expressway projects, including Mai Son - National Highway 45 and Nha Trang - Cam Lam.

On February 2nd, representatives from the Ministry of Transport announced that they have approved adjustments to the operating speed limits for passenger cars, buses with up to 30 seats, and trucks up to 3.5 tons on four-lane highways with a central median (two lanes in each direction).

Eight sections of the expressway have had their speed limits increased: Mai Son - National Highway 45, National Highway 45 - Nghi Son, Nghi Son - Dien Chau, Dien Chau - Bai Vot, Nha Trang - Cam Lam, Cam Lam - Vinh Hao, Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet, and Lao Cai - Kim Thanh border gate. Seven of these sections are part of the first phase of the North-South Expressway project (2017-2021).

The Department of Construction Investment Management (Ministry of Transport) is tasked with directing project management boards and investors to review the already operational sections of the expressway, check technical factors to ensure they meet the 90 km/h speed limit, and adjust the operating speed in the traffic management plan.

With the Cao Bo - Mai Son expressway being 15 km long, due to the presence of four bridges without a continuous hard median strip, and the insufficient length for the acceleration section, the Ministry has not yet permitted an increase in operating speed.

Currently, the country has over 1,890 km of operational expressways. The Ministry of Transport recently authorized an increase in the maximum speed limit to 90 km/h on four-lane expressway projects such as Tuyen Quang - Phu Tho, Trung Luong - My Thuan, and My Thuan - Can Tho . Traffic safety and order have remained stable to date.

Subsequently, the Vietnam Road Administration proposed to the Ministry of Transport to increase the speed limit to 90 km/h for sections of the expressway that are designed with 4 lanes for motor vehicles and have a solid median separating the two directions of traffic.

Phase one of the North-South Expressway project is 654 km long, divided into 11 independently operating component projects, and is expected to be fully operational in 2024. The projects in phase one have a limited 4 lanes, no emergency stopping lanes but with designated emergency stopping points, a roadbed width of 17 m, and a design speed of 80 km/h. Phase two projects will expand to 6 lanes, with a design speed of 120 km/h.
