Pink Star, $71.2 million
The Pink Star, a 59.6-carat diamond and one of the rarest gems on Earth, broke the record at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong in 2017 as the most expensive diamond ever sold at auction. The gem was originally a rough stone from De Beers in 1999, undergoing a painstaking 20-month cutting process. After its London debut in 2003, it was put on display at the Natural History Museum in 2005, attracting more than 70,000 visitors a day.
So how much did this stunning diamond sell for? A whopping $71.2 million.
The Oppenheimer Blue, $57.6 million
In 2016, The Oppenheimer Blue became the most expensive blue diamond sold at auction at Christie's Geneva.
This 14.62-carat fancy vivid blue diamond is the largest ever sold at auction. A heated 25-minute telephone bidding war followed before it sold for a staggering $57.6 million.
Pink Legacy, $50 million
The Pink Legacy is one in a million in its intensity and caused a stir when it was put up for auction in 2018, a hundred years after it was unearthed in South Africa. The 18.96-carat ring was bought by Harry Winston for a whopping $50 million at Christie's Geneva.
Pink Star Williamson, $49.9 million
The Williamson Pink Star made headlines at a Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong in 2022. The fancy vivid pink diamond, originally estimated to be worth $21 million, eventually sold for a staggering $49.9 million. That's a record $5,178,124 per carat, making it one of the most expensive diamonds ever sold.
Blue Moon of Josephine, $48.5 million
Just a year after its debut in South Africa, the Blue Moon diamond was sold at a Sotheby's auction in Geneva in 2015. The stunning 12.03-carat blue gem was purchased by Joseph Lau, a businessman from Japan, for $48.5 million.
The Graff Pink, $46.2 million
The Graff Pink, a stunning 24.78-carat diamond, is truly a sight to behold. The chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewelry Division couldn’t help but admire the gem, calling it “one of the most desirable diamonds I have ever seen.” This rare beauty was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in 2010 to renowned British jeweler Laurence Graff.
The Orange, $35.5 million
The orange diamond is a rare gem and is one of a select few to be awarded the Fancy Vivid designation from the Gemological Institute of America. The pear-shaped diamond is the largest orange diamond known and is 9 carats heavier than the next largest. It fetched $35.5 million at a Christie’s auction in Geneva in 2013, making it one of the most expensive orange diamonds ever sold.
The Zoe Diamond, $32.6 million
That 9.75-carat fancy vivid blue diamond made waves at Sotheby's in November 2014. It sold for $32.6 million, more than double its high estimate, setting a record for both the price of a blue diamond and the price per carat for any diamond.
