Egypt discovers ancient tomb with unique layout
A team of experts from the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo has announced the discovery of a uniquely painted mastaba tomb from the Old Kingdom period (pictured) during the latest excavations at the Dahshour royal cemetery, about 40km from Cairo. The Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) said the discovery provided valuable insight into the socio -political structure of ancient Egyptian society.
Excavation team leader Stephan Seidlmayer revealed that studies showed that this was an ancient Egyptian tomb, a mastaba tomb with truncated pyramid architecture, built with mud bricks from the Nile. In the ancient Egyptian language, mastaba means “eternal house”. What makes this discovery different is the elaborate painted decoration, a rare thing in the royal cemetery of Dahshour. The artwork in the tomb depicts everyday scenes such as donkeys grinding grain, boats moving on the Nile, a bustling market, along with images of servants bringing offerings to the nobles.

Laos excavated many bronze Buddha statues
The Star newspaper reported that the authorities of Bokeo province (Northern Laos) and relevant Lao parties have excavated more than 100 large and small Buddha statues and many Buddha heads of different shapes in Tonpheung district, Bokeo province. On his personal Facebook page, Lao Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Phosy Keomanivong said that most of the small statues found appear to be in intact condition.
According to the Lao Department of Heritage, all the statues and artifacts found during the excavation will be examined. The age and origin of the statues are still unknown, but most are made of bronze, some are inscribed, and have been taken to Thongthip Phatthanaram Pagoda in Yaitonpheung Village, Tonpheung District for preservation. The archaeological remains in the area mostly date back to the Lane Xang Kingdom, although the site was first established centuries ago, more than 1,600 years ago.
