Google has just announced a major update to its AI chatbot Gemini, allowing it to remember and learn from user conversations, providing a more personalized experience. However, complete control remains in the hands of the user.
Previously, Gemini was able to remember past conversations when asked. With the new learning feature, Gemini will proactively learn your interests and provide more personalized interactions. Users can turn this feature off if they don't want the AI to learn about them.
The memory capabilities of AI chatbots have made great strides this year. Tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok also provide forms of memory, allowing users to reference or store specific information. For example, users can provide a name or city for the chatbot to make appropriate suggestions.
However, this feature also comes with its own considerations. Personalization can unintentionally change the behavior and results of the language model, as it tries to guess the user's intent instead of performing the exact request.
Furthermore, users may not want AI to store and retrieve sensitive or private information.
By default, the Gemini app automatically saves information about you and learns from it. When enabled, Gemini will remember what you share and apply it to future responses without you having to specifically ask.
The feature has already started rolling out, first to 2.5 Pro in some countries and will expand to 2.5 Flash in the coming weeks.
Control your personal information on Gemini
Users have full control over what Gemini can remember:
- Turn it off completely: Go to Settings in the Gemini app, go to Personal Background and turn this feature off.
- Delete specific information: Users can review and delete certain conversations or information from Gemini's memory.
- Use Temporary Chat: If you want to have a private conversation that Gemini won't save, use the "Temporary Chat" feature. Similar to incognito mode on a web browser, this conversation won't be saved to long-term memory.
Users can also manage whether Google uses content uploaded to Gemini to improve its AI upscaling products.
Note that some features will be available in Vietnam in the coming weeks.
