The song "Dream 20 ," like the way Microwave has made music over the past 20 years, uses the band's own true stories.
After 20 years, Microwave's music will become simpler.
The song tells the story of Tung Tran, the leader of the band Microwave, about his own 20-year dream. He said: " The 20-year dream is a dream that originated in my 20s, from the most beautiful moment of my life. And 20 years later, looking back, that dream is still just a dream. Life is often like a dream; the better we live in the present, the more beautiful our dream becomes, and we always get to live in the most beautiful dream. That's the 20-year dream , and I think everyone has their own 20-year dream."
Despite its simple concept, the music video still proved challenging for the members.
And musically, according to Microwave, "Dream 20" is completely different from what the band has done in their previous albums. The recording is simple, featuring only drums, guitar, bass, and vocals, without using any electronic effects or techniques, aiming for a raw and emotional sound. However, as the band shared, things that seem simple often have complexities behind them. For example, to choose a guitar sound they liked, the band had to experiment on more than 20 different guitars.
One memorable experience for the band and crew was filming underwater. Before filming, the band members underwent training, practicing breathing and diving with professional instructors, to learn how to hold their breath and perform underwater.
"Giấc mơ 20" (Dream 20) was directed by Tran Trung Linh, a friend of Microwave and also a director/artist who has contributed to many Vietnamese films. Following the simple approach of the "Giấc mơ 20" audio track, the music video was also made as simple as possible by the band and director (reflected in the costumes and the set design, using only lighting and camera shots...).
The simplicity and intimacy of the music video are further emphasized by its emotional director, dancer Le Hoang Nga My. She is the perfect fit for the video because of her contrasting qualities – her femininity, softness, and innocence juxtaposed with the strength, roughness, and grittiness of genuine rockers.
However, watching the music video reveals a complex emotional landscape, as it doesn't serve a specific narrative but rather a series of emotions. Director Tran Trung Linh explained that he used metaphorical imagery from thin layers of smoke, nylon, and water to explore multiple layers of emotion, the inner conflict, the struggle, the disorientation, and the mixed feelings of joy and sadness in "Dream 20."
