Daniel Tingcungco (Manila, Philippines) currently lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City. His main occupation is the senior art director of an advertising agency and he is also a freelance illustrator. “With this project, I present dishes that have impressed or amused me. It is also a way for me to discover Vietnamese cuisine and many other dishes available in Saigon,” he said.

To carry out this project, Daniel Tingcungco said he always tries to spend an hour a day on drawing. Before drawing a work, he travels to many places to “catch the moment” or to get an idea. “I have to have an overall sense of aroma, hot or cold, taste… Necessary, I will record the “references” and translate it in my own way through illustrations on the iPad. . I always try to draw interesting moments that I experience,” he shared.

“Vietnamese people are very friendly and warm!”
Through his paintings, he hopes people will discover Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular with a wonderful culinary paradise that is not just famous dishes such as pho, bread and coffee. “For me, Vietnamese cuisine is becoming more and more a favorite because I find it very new. It has a balance of flavors, tastes and is prepared to suit the weather, space and available ingredients. This makes people all over the world impressed and love it,” he shared.
Talking more about Saigon cuisine, where he lives and works, Daniel Tingcungco commented that it is a rich combination of regional and world cuisine. The painter thinks that Saigon people have a way of receiving different dishes, making them their own and making it special.
Having been with Vietnam for more than 3 years, even though he is far from his home country, Daniel Tingcungco always feels comfortable. He said traffic in Vietnam is somewhat similar to the Philippines, not too congested because motorbike traffic is more than other vehicles and motorbikes take up less space. For him, traffic jam in HCMC is not a problem so he can easily move everywhere.
“Vietnamese people are very friendly and warm, just like people back home. They can be hard workers, but always find time to relax and enjoy life. Every day, they often sit on the side of the road with a cup of coffee, which is a familiar image I often come across," he shared.
