From offerings of gratitude to a journey to find fallen comrades.
The work of "showing gratitude and repaying kindness" has always been considered a sacred responsibility by all levels of the Veterans Association in Quang Tri province. This activity is maintained regularly, linked to specific and practical actions that support members and families of war veterans. From caring for and supporting members' lives to activities expressing gratitude to those who have contributed to the nation, the Associations at all levels in the province are contributing to spreading the principle of "drinking water, remembering the source," continuing the fine traditions of soldiers on this land rich in revolutionary history.
According to Tran Ngoc Sam, Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial Veterans Association, among the nearly 92,000 members throughout the province, the majority participated in the national resistance wars and fulfilled noble international duties. The Association at all levels identifies the "Gratitude and Repayment" work as a regular task with profound political and humanitarian significance. Over the years, the Quang Tri Provincial Veterans Association has directed its branches to strengthen propaganda and mobilize cadres and members to actively participate in gratitude activities through various practical and meaningful forms. In 2025 alone, the Veterans Associations at all levels in the province coordinated and organized visits and gift-giving to policy beneficiary families and families in difficult circumstances during holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year), with a total value of over 4.7 billion VND.
Beyond regular commemorative activities, the Provincial Veterans Association actively participates in the search and repatriation of the remains of fallen soldiers. As a member of the Provincial Steering Committee 515, the Association closely coordinates with relevant agencies in providing information and supporting the search and repatriation of the remains of fallen soldiers on battlefields both domestically and in neighboring Laos.
Mr. Tran Ngoc Sam, Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial Veterans Association, emphasized that the search for and collection of the remains of fallen soldiers is a particularly sacred and noble political task of the entire Party, the entire people, the entire army, and the entire political system; in which, the veteran force plays a very important role, especially in responding to the "500-day campaign to intensify the search, collection, and identification of the remains of fallen soldiers." This is a meaningful undertaking that contributes to alleviating the pain of war and fulfilling the heartfelt wishes and aspirations of the relatives of fallen soldiers and the people and soldiers nationwide.
According to the Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial Veterans Association, the work of showing gratitude and caring for those who have rendered meritorious service not only demonstrates profound gratitude towards those who sacrificed and contributed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, but also represents a responsibility towards those bearing war-related injuries, policy beneficiary families, and those who have rendered meritorious service to the revolution.
Based on this understanding, many practical activities have been regularly and systematically maintained by all levels of the Association. Gifts are handed directly to families of war veterans during holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year); homes are repaired and newly built; incense is offered respectfully at cemeteries and memorial sites; and candlelight vigils and lantern releases are held... all are carried out with gratitude and responsibility from those who experienced the war and from today's generation towards their predecessors.
Spreading camaraderie and solidarity.
Along with paying tribute to fallen heroes and martyrs, the Veterans' Associations at all levels in Quang Tri province pay much attention to and care for the lives of their members, families of policy beneficiaries, and those in difficult circumstances in the community.
In Hoan Lao commune, after the administrative unit was reorganized according to the two-tiered local government model, the Veterans Association was quickly consolidated and began operating stably. Currently, the commune's Veterans Association has 44 branches with 2,870 members.
Mr. Do Nhu Tat, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Hoan Lao commune, said that the work of showing gratitude and repaying kindness is always considered a regular task of the Association. The Association has established a "Comradeship Fund" with over 88 million VND; visited and presented gifts to people in difficult circumstances during holidays and Tet, with a total value of nearly 25 million VND; and adopted an orphan child with a monthly support of 500,000 VND...
Veterans in Hoan Lao commune contributed over 340 man-days to repairing and cleaning memorials and martyrs' cemeteries; and provided information to assist in the search for a fallen soldier's grave. In particular, the Association directed its village and neighborhood branches to regularly care for and assist at least one member with particularly difficult circumstances. From small gifts and days of labor to timely encouragement during illness and hardship, the camaraderie continues to be nurtured in daily life.
Veteran Tran Van Phu (Thanh Khe village, Bac Trach commune) is one of the veteran association members who actively participates in charitable activities in the locality and supports many members in developing their economy and stabilizing their lives. From his family's production and business model, Mr. Phu creates jobs for about 30 workers, mostly veteran association members and children of local veterans, with stable incomes of 7-10 million VND per person per month. According to Mr. Phu, helping comrades find jobs and income is also a way to continue the camaraderie of soldiers in peacetime.
Veteran Tran Van Phu shared: “After leaving the military, what I always cherish and preserve is the camaraderie among comrades. We often remind each other to live responsibly, to care for and help comrades in need, and the families of those who sacrificed and dedicated themselves to the country. Doing something useful for the community and our comrades makes us feel warmer inside.”
In the same spirit, in Hieu Giang commune, the "Gratitude and Repayment" campaign has become a regular activity, deepening its impact and receiving positive support from a large number of officials and members.
According to Nguyen The Nhon, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Hieu Giang commune, the "Gratitude and Remembrance" work is a "command from the heart" of today's comrades. Activities of gratitude are regularly maintained through various practical forms, suitable to the local context. Locally, the Association proactively assigns its branches to periodically maintain four memorial monuments for heroic martyrs and manage and care for five martyrs' cemeteries in the area. From sweeping, clearing bushes, tidying the grounds to whitewashing the graves, everything is done with deep respect and gratitude. Regarding the memorial monument commemorating 13 martyrs in the Ho Khe - Da Bac mountain area, despite difficult access, members regularly organize cleaning and incense offerings in remembrance.
The Veterans Association of Hieu Giang commune coordinated visits and provided encouragement to over 440 families who worship fallen soldiers, 76 families of wounded and sick soldiers, and 51 families who have made contributions to the revolution. These activities not only have material significance but also represent sharing and encouragement for families who have made many contributions and sacrifices for the country. The Association always pays attention to social welfare activities, with over 237 members participating in voluntary blood donation; mobilizing over 352 man-days to repair houses for members and policy beneficiary families; contributing 1,830 man-days to participate in building new rural areas, beautifying the landscape, and protecting the environment. The movement to help each other develop the economy and reduce poverty sustainably continues to be effectively maintained. To date, 1,073 members have contributed to the "Comradeship Fund" with a total amount of 2.6 billion VND. These resources have supported and empowered many member families to invest in production development and stabilize their lives.
Whether expressed through grand gestures or simple acts of kindness, gratitude always stems from thankfulness and a sense of responsibility towards those who sacrificed and dedicated themselves to the country. These humanistic values are being persistently preserved, nurtured, and spread by the Veterans' Associations at all levels in Quang Tri province. For the soldiers of yesteryear, they quietly continue their journey through simple yet meaningful actions. This is a journey of keeping their promises to their comrades, upholding the national tradition of "drinking water, remembering the source," and contributing to the shining example of the noble qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers in today's life.
