India imported 34,190 tonnes of fertilizers, including urea and DAP, from Russia during April 2022-February 2023 of the current fiscal (ending March 31), The Economic Times reported, citing data presented in parliament .
This is the highest import level in the past 3 years.
In a written reply to the Indian parliament, Fertilizers Minister Bhagwanth Khuba said that urea imports from the beginning of the current financial year till February were more than double compared to the same period last fiscal.
Of the total 34,190 tonnes of imported fertilizer, about 6,260 tonnes were urea, a sharp increase from the 2,800 tonnes imported in the entire previous fiscal year.
Apart from urea, Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP), Muriate of Potash (MoP) and NPK are other fertilizers imported by India from Russia.
Data shows that India imported DAP at 7,650 tonnes, MoP at 430 tonnes and NPK at 19,850 tonnes during the reporting period.
India's total fertilizer imports from Russia stood at 19,150 tonnes in FY 2021-22, similar to FY 2020-21 and up from 11,910 tonnes in FY 2019-20.
Urea and DAP are the two most consumed fertilizers. The minister said that the government has taken several measures to boost domestic urea production. Six new urea plants have been set up under the new investment policy.
In a separate reply, he said the country's available fertilizer supply would still be sufficient to meet demand in the 2022-23 crop year.
The gap between demand and production of urea and other fertilizers is met through imports. Imports are usually planned in advance to ensure timely availability.
The minister said state governments are regularly advised to coordinate with fertilizer manufacturers and importers to streamline supplies through timely arrangements.
He added that the movement of all major government-subsidized fertilizers can be tracked nationwide through an online-based monitoring system: the Integrated Fertilizer Monitoring System (iFMS).
