The Economic Times, citing data presented to parliament , reported that India imported 34,190 tonnes of fertilizers, including urea and DAP, from Russia between April 2022 and February 2023 of the current fiscal year (ending March 31).
This is the highest import level in the past three years.
In a written response to the Indian Parliament, Fertilizer Minister Bhagwanth Khuba stated that urea imports from the beginning of the current fiscal year up to February were more than double those of the same period in the previous fiscal year.
Of the total 34,190 tons of imported fertilizer, approximately 6,260 tons were urea, a significant increase compared to the 2,800 tons imported in the entire previous fiscal year.
Besides urea, Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP), Muriate of Potash (MoP), and NPK are other fertilizers that India imports from Russia.
Data shows that India imported 7,650 tonnes of DAP, 430 tonnes of MoP, and 19,850 tonnes of NPK during the reporting period.
India's total fertilizer imports from Russia reached 19,150 tonnes in the 2021-2022 financial year, the same level as the 2020-2021 financial year and an increase from 11,910 tonnes in the 2019-2020 financial year.
Urea and DAP are the two most widely consumed fertilizers. The minister stated that the government has implemented several measures to boost domestic urea production. Six new urea production plants have been established under the new investment policy.
In a separate response, he stated that the amount of fertilizer available in the country is still sufficient to meet demand during the 2022-2023 crop year.
The gap between demand and production of urea and other fertilizers is filled through imports. Imports are usually planned in advance to ensure timely availability.
The minister said state governments are regularly advised to coordinate with fertilizer manufacturers and importers to streamline supply through timely arrangements.
He added that the shipping routes for all major government-subsidized fertilizers can be tracked nationwide through an online monitoring system: the Integrated Fertilizer Monitoring System (iFMS).
