After more than three decades, the singer still hasn't forgotten the kindness of the piano repairman who quietly helped her when Thuy Dung was facing her first major career opportunity.
In 1991, Thuy Dung, then a piano student, had just won third prize in the National Autumn Piano Competition. Encouraged by her father, the young woman decided to try her luck in the 2nd National Light Music Solo Singing Competition, even though it was a completely new field for her.
"My father encouraged me, saying I had nothing to lose because I was a professional pianist," the singer recounted.

Having passed the preliminary round, Thùy Dung advanced to the second round of the competition. To create a distinctive impression for a contestant performing on a professional music stage for the first time, the Hanoi delegation decided to portray Thùy Dung as someone who both sings and plays the piano.
However, an unexpected difficulty arose when the organizers announced that the piano at the Hanoi Opera House had a broken leg, was severely damaged, and unusable. If they wanted to perform, the performers would have to pay for the repairs themselves. This was a considerable sum for singer Thuy Dung's family at the time.
"My family was struggling financially, and seeing such a large piano, I didn't know where I would get the money to repair it. Even if I borrowed money, I didn't know what the outcome of the competition would be," she recalled.
Just then, someone quietly appeared. It was Uncle Hao, who was considered a master in the piano repair trade.
Without hesitation, he spent consecutive days at the Grand Theatre tuning the piano, repairing the broken legs, restoring the keyboard, and adjusting the entire instrument so that Thùy Dung could perform.
At the final night, the piano was brought onto the stage with the help of friends and family in the shortest time possible to avoid violating the competition rules. Thuy Dung performed the song "Always" with piano accompaniment that she herself played.
The performance received high praise from the judges. As a result, Thùy Dung won second prize, sharing it with singer Ngọc Sơn and the late artist Y Moan. This was an achievement beyond expectations, marking a major turning point in the young woman's life.
"That result was so unexpected and brilliant for the entire Hanoi delegation. After the competition, I officially stepped onto big stages and became a professional singer," Thuy Dung shared.
After winning the award, the singer and her parents went to Mr. Hao's house to thank him. But the instrument repairman resolutely refused to accept any payment. "He only said one thing: 'I know your family is struggling,'" Thuy Dung recalled emotionally.
Recently, when Mr. Hao came to take care of Thuy Dung's guitar at her home, the two had the opportunity to reminisce about old times. The female singer decided to recount the story of this special benefactor in her life. "If it weren't for that guitar back then, there probably wouldn't be the singer Thuy Dung of today," she expressed.
Singer Thùy Dung also revealed that Uncle Hào is a highly respected name in the Vietnamese piano community. According to the singer, whenever world- renowned pianist Đặng Thái Sơn performs, he only feels at ease when Uncle Hào is the one tuning the piano.
Singer Thùy Dung expressed her sincere gratitude to the unsung hero who helped her achieve her artistic dreams: "Thank you so much, Uncle. I wish you good health. To me, you will always be the person who contributed to the biggest turning point in my life."
