In reality, the majority of drowning incidents among children occur during the summer in ponds, lakes, and streams near their homes. Furthermore, some parents are negligent in supervising and reminding their children regularly, leading to children swimming and playing in potentially dangerous areas. Therefore, promoting awareness and equipping children with knowledge and skills to prevent drowning at the grassroots level is crucial in reducing injuries and accidents among children.
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Thao, Vice President of the Provincial Youth Union Council, said: "From the end of the 2025-2026 school year, the Provincial Youth Union and the Provincial Youth Union Council have directed local branches to strengthen coordination with schools, families, and local authorities to organize activities to raise awareness and train children in water safety skills. We also aim for the Youth Unions in communes and wards to organize at least one free swimming class or one training course on drowning prevention skills; and to implement at least five awareness campaigns to improve the understanding of children, families, and the community."
From the beginning of the 2026 summer vacation until now, the entire province has organized 148 activities to raise awareness and train over 98,000 children in drowning prevention skills; and organized 5 classes to disseminate water safety skills to 250 children. |
Recognizing this as a key task in protecting and caring for children during the summer, youth organizations at all levels have intensified propaganda through summer activities in residential areas. Here, youth groups in villages and residential areas organize many practical activities such as: showing educational films, quizzes to test knowledge, and guidance on handling emergency situations. Through these activities, children are equipped with knowledge about the risks of drowning; safety principles when playing and swimming; and skills to respond to incidents. Hoang Minh Duc, from Keo Coong village, Tan Van commune, said: "I really enjoy these summer activities. We learn skills to prevent drowning and avoid injuries, and we also participate in useful and interesting games."
Besides direct outreach, youth union and association branches at all levels are also promoting communication on digital platforms and social media; creating video clips, infographics, and other visual and engaging communication products suitable for children. At the same time, youth unions at the commune and ward levels are proactively reviewing areas with potential drowning risks such as landslide areas, water pits, deeply flooded areas, and water storage facilities… to promptly erect warning signs and barriers to minimize safety risks. Youth union and association branches are also effectively utilizing cultural institutions, organizing free swimming lessons and water safety training courses, or providing tuition support for disadvantaged children in remote areas and areas where drowning accidents frequently occur.
According to Mr. Hoang Van Hue , Deputy Secretary of the Tam Thanh Ward Youth Union: at the end of the 2025-2026 school year, the Ward Youth Union coordinated with the police force to organize awareness campaigns on drowning prevention at 5 schools in the area, with approximately 2,500 children participating. In the future, we will continue to mobilize social resources to organize at least one swimming class for children in the area.
Since the beginning of the 2026 summer vacation, the entire province has organized 148 activities to raise awareness and train over 98,000 children in drowning prevention skills; and organized 5 classes on water safety skills for 250 children. In addition, youth organizations at all levels have posted and shared thousands of media products guiding children on water safety skills.
In reality, many drowning incidents occur due to children's lack of safety skills or insufficient adult supervision. Therefore, along with the involvement of all levels of government, relevant agencies, and organizations, families need to strengthen management, supervision, and equip children with self-protection skills. Close cooperation between families, schools, and society will contribute to ensuring children have a safe and enriching summer.
