Preserving the soul of heritage
Nestled in the sun-drenched, windswept land of Bac Binh commune, the Cham pottery village of Binh Duc quietly preserves traditional cultural values passed down through generations. Unlike many other craft villages that use potters, the artisans here completely shape their products by hand from local clay, creating pots, jars, water jugs, and other handicrafts bearing the distinctive mark of Cham culture.
Cham pottery artisan Luong Thi Hoa said that pottery making has been closely associated with the lives of the Cham people for generations. Since childhood, she has been taught each step of pottery making by the elders in her family. Even today, despite many changes in life, the traditional techniques have been preserved almost intact.
What makes Binh Duc Cham pottery unique is its rustic charm and almost entirely handcrafted nature. From selecting the clay, kneading, shaping, drying in the sun, and firing in the open air, everything is done using experience accumulated over generations. The combination of earth, fire, wind, and sun creates products with natural colors, and no two pieces are alike. More than just a livelihood, pottery making preserves the cultural values, beliefs, and folk knowledge of the Cham community.

However, like many other traditional crafts, Cham pottery is facing numerous challenges. Many artisans are elderly, while the number of younger generations is limited. Production space is shrinking, and handcrafted products must compete with cheaper and more convenient industrial goods. This creates an urgent need to find new directions to preserve and promote the value of the craft village.
Developing community tourism
To preserve and promote the value of Cham pottery, at the end of 2025, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will implement the project "Connecting the intangible cultural heritage of Cham pottery making" with the Binh Duc - Binh Tien tourism route in Bac Binh commune. Through training courses, artisans and local people will be equipped with skills to promote and tell stories about the heritage, and build documentation to serve the work of preservation and tourism development.
Following the training, activities such as passing on skills, displaying and introducing products continued to be maintained, contributing to attracting young people to participate in preserving traditional crafts. Many artisans also proactively introduced their products and shared stories about pottery making with tourists, gradually bringing the heritage closer to the community.
In particular, connecting the pottery village with community tourism is opening up a new direction for local development. Visitors to Binh Duc not only get to tour the craft village but also directly experience the pottery-making process under the guidance of artisans. These authentic experiences help visitors better understand the value of the traditional craft, while also creating additional income for the local people.

According to Nguyen Quoc Thang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Bac Binh commune, the project contributes to the effective implementation of the conservation and promotion of the intangible cultural heritage of "Traditional Cham pottery making," which has been inscribed by UNESCO as requiring urgent protection. At the same time, the project also creates motivation for people to participate in community tourism development, increase income, and preserve traditional crafts.
Based on initial results, the model of linking Cham pottery with tourism is opening up an effective direction in preserving and promoting heritage values. When people directly participate in preserving and benefiting from the traditional craft, Cham pottery is not only preserved but also becomes a unique cultural tourism product, contributing to creating livelihoods, increasing income, and promoting sustainable development. Through this, the long-standing cultural values of the Cham community continue to be preserved and spread in modern life.
