Before the hype surrounding the first season of "Brother Says Hi" had even died down, the production team quickly announced the cast and broadcast date for season 2.
The production team hastily announced 30 names in just a few hours. Many of these names caused quite a stir and sparked much discussion because few expected them to be on the list.
The cast sparks controversy.
Ngo Kien Huy was among the first five artists announced. For some time now, audiences thought Ngo Kien Huy would be participating in "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles" rather than "Brother Say Hi." The reason is that the singer was a guest performer in the "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles" concert in Hung Yen at the end of 2024. Ngo Kien Huy's music and distinctive style were also considered more suitable for "Brother" than "Brother." Therefore, as soon as Ngo Kien Huy's name was announced by the "Brother Say Hi" team, many conflicting opinions appeared on social media.
But the names that followed, the "Brother Say Hi" team, were even more surprising, especially Karik, BRay, and BigDaddy. Besides their extensive experience in the music market with viral hits that have solidified their position and reputation, Karik, BRay, and BigDaddy have even served as judges on music competitions.
They previously served as coaches or judges on Rap Viet, also produced by the same company behind "Anh trai say hi". Now, all three have become contestants in a music competition, competing against some who were even their former students on Rap Viet.
Countless questions have been raised about the appearance of Karik, BRay, and BigDaddy, such as why they participated in "Brother Say Hi" or what they are looking for in an entertainment music competition.
The competition format, which emphasizes group performances and demands strong dance and stage presence, will undoubtedly be a fresh experience for rappers like Karik, BRay, and BigDaddy. Furthermore, the show is geared towards entertainment, featuring comedic moments and humorous, physical games. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the rappers to reinvent themselves and showcase a different side of themselves that they haven't revealed before.
The surprises from the "say hi" brother didn't stop there. The return of the two brothers who participated in season 1, Negav and Pham Dinh Thai Ngan, has further fueled discussions surrounding the show on social media. Negav's case has attracted the most attention because he has been involved in several controversies recently. Therefore, there are quite a few doubts and criticisms surrounding this rapper.
The final five names announced were Vu Cat Tuong, BigDaddy, Tez, JeyB, and Nham Phuong Nam. At this point, Vu Cat Tuong became the center of attention. In fact, since the rumored list spread on social media, Vu Cat Tuong's appearance had been surprising. Some viewers felt that Vu Cat Tuong was not suitable to participate in this competition, while others supported her.
Each of the posts announcing the show's "say hi" receives tens of thousands of interactions. These numbers demonstrate the show's current popularity.
Is 'brother saying hi' a sign of support or an expansion of Vietnamese Rap?
Similar to last season, "Brother Says Hi" features 30 participating artists. It's clear that rappers make up about one-third of the list, with the majority being relatively new faces, not yet widely known.
Besides BigDaddy, BRay, and Karik, the lineup of rappers in "Brother Says Hi" Season 2 also includes Tez, Phuc Du, Hustlang Robber, Ogenus, Negav, GILL, and Mason Nguyen. Many of the rappers in "Brother Says Hi" emerged from previous seasons of Rap Viet. They may have been judges, coaches, or contestants on Rap Viet.
Compared to season 1, the presence of Vietnamese Rap in "Brother Says Hi" is significantly greater. The appearance of a large number of rappers has sparked curiosity and excitement, but also raised concerns.
Will the "Brother Say Hi" segment be turned into an extension of Vietnamese Rap? That's what the public is wondering. In return, the fact that rappers have to challenge themselves with their dancing and performance skills promises to bring a fresh perspective and humorous moments to the show.
The rest of the list of "say hi" brothers includes many new faces, not yet known to the public, such as JAYSONLEI, Ryn Lee (Quang Hung MasterD's younger brother), Jey B, Son.K, Hai Nam, Lohan… Although they haven't made much of an impact on the market yet, many of the aforementioned singers have songwriting and music production abilities. Therefore, they are very unpredictable unknowns.
For example, Bui Duy Ngoc has produced many projects, the most successful of which is When I grow up Orange's Do Nam Son and CongB previously participated in a "survival" competition in South Korea, so they have strengths in dance and performance. Dillon - Hoang Phan, born in 2000, previously competed alongside Hung Huynh in China's Asia Super Young.
However, in the announced list of "Brother Say Hi," apart from Vu Cat Tuong, the audience hasn't seen many truly strong and outstanding talents in terms of vocal ability and technique like RHYDER, Erik, Duc Phuc, Anh Tu Voi, Pham Anh Duy, or Ali Hoang Duong from the previous season.
Some singers in season 2 had previously participated in music competitions and possessed good voices, but they hadn't made a significant enough impression to gain the audience's trust in their vocal skills. Therefore, viewers were increasingly concerned that season 2 of "Brother Say Hi" might have vocal shortcomings and be transformed into a Vietnamese rap competition, given the large number of rappers.
The "say hi" older brother might still be popular, thanks to the huge success of season 1. But with the list of older brothers as above, can season 2 surpass the shadow of the first season? The answer will have to wait until September, when the show officially airs.
