Apple has just announced plans to manufacture Mac mini desktop computers in Houston, USA, by the end of this year. According to Bloomberg , this move comes after pressure from President Donald Trump to increase domestic production.
Mac mini production is expected to take place at Foxconn's factory north of Houston. This is also where the servers that power Apple Intelligence features are assembled.
The AI server manufacturing facility itself has also been expanded, including a training area of over 1,800 square meters. According to the WSJ , the warehouse area will be converted into a Mac mini production facility, covering approximately 2 hectares.
Currently, Apple manufactures most of its Mac computers in Asia, including China, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Previously, the company manufactured the Mac Pro, its highest-end model with the lowest production volume, in Texas (USA).
According to Bloomberg , this strategy has encountered numerous problems since its experimental implementation in 2013. Apple itself is reportedly no longer focusing on the Mac Pro, instead shifting to the more compact Mac Studio.
The Mac mini also belongs to the group of devices with low production volumes, ranking behind models such as the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac.
According to estimates from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners , this line of machines accounted for less than 5% of Apple's Mac sales last year, and less than 1% of total hardware sales.
With a starting price of $600 , the Mac mini has attracted attention recently as many buyers opt for AI software. Rumors suggest the product will be upgraded this year, featuring a new processor.

For the Mac Pro, Apple maintains assembly facilities in the US for domestic sales and in Asia for export to other markets. The company plans to apply a similar strategy with the Mac mini.
Unlike the Mac Pro or Mac mini, Apple has no plans to assemble popular products like the iPhone or iPad in the US, even though its partner Corning is manufacturing iPhone display components domestically.
Apple's latest move is part of the $600 billion investment in the U.S. that CEO Tim Cook announced last year. During a meeting with then-President Donald Trump, Cook drew attention by giving Trump a gold bar and a circular piece of glass made in the U.S.
"Apple is deeply committed to the future of manufacturing in America. We are proud to expand our presence in Houston with Mac mini production beginning later this year," Tim Cook said in an announcement on February 24.
Analysts believe Apple has been overly accommodating to the Trump administration. However, these efforts have helped the company avoid significant pressure regarding tariffs and pricing.
In 2019, Apple sparked controversy when it held a tour of its Mac Pro manufacturing plant in Texas, attended by President Trump. This time, the announcement of Mac mini production in the US was more low-key.
