Apple loses credibility because of AI.

Apple is facing criticism for delaying the release of a new version of Siri despite extensive advertising.

Writing on Daring Fireball , analyst John Gruber harshly criticized Apple for the AI upgrade for Siri failing to release as planned, delaying it until 2026.

Gruber has been writing about Apple for over 20 years. Lately, he has frequently complained about Apple's slow pace in the AI race.

In an article titled "Something Annoying in Cupertino," Gruber emphasized that Apple's reputation was damaged by the delays. He also discussed how Apple "deceived consumers" with false advertising.

Apple is "deceiving" its users.

"The disaster here isn't Apple's delay. The disaster is that Apple told a false story. A story that some people in the company knew was impossible, yet they based their roadmap on that story," Gruber said.

Analysts expressed "anger" when Apple announced that personalized Siri features (based on Apple Intelligence) would be delayed until next year.

"I should get my head checked," Gruber emphasized. The implication of this statement is that Gruber and users should not have trusted Apple's promises about plans to release AI features.

According to the author, Apple announced many AI features at WWDC 2024. However, the tools that have been released are only "ordinary," such as word processing (Writing Tools) or image creation (Image Playground).

Aside from some of the features mentioned above, more crucial tools are yet to materialize. For example, the video demonstrating the new version of Siri is only a graphical render.

The AppleInsider website also pointed out the same thing when Apple released advertisements for Genmoji, using images not created by the tool.

“What Apple presented about the upcoming ‘Personalized Siri’ at WWDC wasn’t a demo. It was just a concept video. This is nonsense and a sign of a company in chaos, if not crisis,” said a longtime Apple writer.

According to Gruber, the debate likely originated within Apple regarding whether or not to promote unfinished features. However, the final decision ultimately rests with CEO Tim Cook.

"You can distort the truth and maintain credibility, but you can't maintain credibility with lies. The 'Personalized Siri' features are a lie," the analyst emphasized.

Damage to Apple's reputation

Gruber compared the situation of Apple Intelligence under CEO Tim Cook to the MobileMe cloud service under Steve Jobs. While Jobs was furious when MobileMe didn't launch smoothly in 2008, Cook is said to have been quite lenient.

At that time, Jobs even replaced the project's leadership team. He also specifically named a journalist who turned against the company because of MobileMe's failure.

In fact, Apple has made similar moves after 17 years. Software veteran Kim Vorrath moved to the AI team to improve Siri and related projects. Of course, people are still wondering whether Cook will embrace bigger changes.

Even if everything is fixed, users won't know exactly when the new feature will be released. According to Gruber, the phrase "Available Today" used to create surprises seems outdated.

Of course, the new version of Siri isn't the only Apple product that's been delayed. The AirPower charging dock disappeared after the 2017 event. However, Gruber argues that AirPower isn't that important, while AI could bring about a major change.

The new version of CarPlay also failed to launch as planned, even though the software depends on dozens of automakers. Overall, the AI crisis has had a significant impact on Apple's brand image.

"Apple is not at risk of financial bankruptcy (in fact, it remains the most profitable company in the world ). However, its reputation has been damaged," Gruber emphasized.
