According to MacRumors , there's bad news for Apple enthusiasts who love innovation. The foldable iPhone project is likely stalled because the screens produced by the supplier don't meet the company's stringent standards.

This information comes from Fixed Focus Digital, a tech blogger on the popular social media platform Weibo, who claims that Apple has been testing various foldable phone models from competitors as part of its research and development process for its own foldable device, reportedly starting in 2016.

Among the foldable phone prototypes tested, at least one device uses a screen manufactured by Samsung. Samsung is a key supplier of display panels for Apple devices and has also supplied foldable screens to the company in the past. Furthermore, a recent report indicated that Samsung is working to improve operational efficiency in preparation for producing foldable screens for iPhones, drawing on its experience manufacturing foldable devices since 2019.

However, a Chinese blogger shared that Samsung's latest foldable screen malfunctioned after only a few days of rigorous testing by Apple, causing the entire project to be put on hold until the company could find a supplier that could meet its stringent screen quality requirements.

Earlier this month, The Information also reported that Apple is actively building prototypes of at least two foldable iPhone models, after more than five years of research and development. Both are described as having a clamshell-like horizontal folding design, but are not yet in Apple's product roadmap for 2024 or 2025. The report also noted that the project could be completely canceled if it does not meet Apple's standards.

Furthermore, it remains unclear whether this pause will affect Apple's foldable iPad project. Earlier this month, South Korean news outlet The Elec reported that Apple is considering launching its first foldable tablet in the next few years, as a 7-8 inch device that could replace the 8.3-inch iPad mini.
