Bloomberg quoted internal sources as saying that the number of iPhones produced in India has now reached 20% of total global output, equivalent to about 22 billion USD excluding retail costs.
The production ramp-up shows that Apple and its suppliers are accelerating their shift to India, starting after the Covid-19 impact period. The bitten Apple has been proactive in increasing production in India. Foxconn's factory in Chennai, Apple's largest assembly partner, was directed to operate on Sunday (April 6), a holiday, to increase production by 20% compared to normal.
Last year, the factory shipped about 20 million iPhones, including the iPhone 15 and 16. In addition to Foxconn, Apple also partners with the Tata Group in India, with the two partners operating three iPhone assembly plants in total, with two new factories under construction.
A senior Indian official said it took Apple about eight months to develop the emergency transport plan, which included negotiating a “green corridor” at Chennai airport. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has directly asked authorities to provide Apple with all possible support.
According to trade data, the value of Foxconn's iPhone shipments from India to the US jumped earlier this year - reaching $770 million in January and $643 million in February, compared with a range of $110 million to $331 million in the previous four months.
According to Bloomberg, Apple currently has nearly 8% market share in the Indian smartphone market, with sales mostly from iPhones, reaching nearly $8 billion in fiscal 2024.
