Bloomberg , citing internal sources, revealed that the number of iPhones manufactured in India has now reached 20% of total global production, equivalent to approximately $22 billion , excluding retail costs.
This production acceleration shows that Apple and its suppliers are speeding up their shift to India, starting after the Covid-19 pandemic. Apple has proactively increased production in India. The Foxconn factory in Chennai, Apple's largest assembly partner, was instructed to operate all day Sunday (April 6), a holiday, to boost production by 20% compared to normal.
Last year, this factory shipped approximately 20 million iPhones, including the iPhone 15 and 16. In addition to Foxconn, Apple also collaborates with the Tata Group in India; together, these two partners operate three iPhone assembly plants, with two new plants under construction.
A senior Indian official said Apple spent about eight months developing this emergency shipping plan, which included negotiating the establishment of a “green corridor” at Chennai airport. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government directly instructed relevant authorities to provide Apple with maximum support.
According to trade data, the value of Foxconn's iPhone exports from India to the US surged in the early part of this year – reaching $770 million in January and $643 million in February, compared to fluctuations of $110 to $331 million in the four preceding months.
According to Bloomberg, Apple currently holds nearly 8% market share in the Indian smartphone market, with sales largely coming from iPhones, reaching nearly $8 billion in fiscal year 2024.
