A report from ET News, reposted by MacRumors , claims Apple has ordered 22 million OLED panels from Samsung Display for its first foldable iPhone.
According to AppleInsider , this figure describes the split between the inner foldable screen and the outer secondary screen, meaning a total production of nearly 10 million complete devices after accounting for production efficiency that is not 100%.
These figures show that Apple has very high expectations for the foldable smartphone segment. With ambitions to sell nearly 10 million units, Apple seems to want not only to "test" the market but also to dominate it immediately. It's important to emphasize that this segment is still a small part of the global smartphone market.
For comparison, the annual shipment volume of the entire foldable smartphone market is only in the tens of millions, representing a very small share of the total global volume.
"A shipment of nearly 10 million units would put Apple's first foldable iPhone on par with the entire existing segment. This signals an extremely bold strategy, or perhaps an overconfidence, that the Apple brand can instantly change the entire market," AppleInsider commented.
Based on rumors, Apple is expected to launch a foldable iPhone in 2026. Not only will it be the company's first foldable smartphone, but the device will also feature groundbreaking functionalities that set it apart from the competition.
According to data from JPMorgan, the foldable iPhone will feature a 24MP under-display selfie camera. If this information is accurate, this would be the highest resolution for a foldable phone. For comparison, previous foldable Android smartphones only had 4-8MP hidden cameras, which were of lower quality.
The upgrade of the hidden camera's resolution to 24 MP, along with its 6-layer lens, likely results in sharper selfies. This detail suggests that Apple's engineering team has found a solution to improve light transmission through the display panel, leading to better quality from the hidden camera.
Regarding the display, rumors suggest Apple has addressed the common issue of creases on foldable smartphones. On November 24th, UDN , citing sources from the supply chain, highlighted improvements in the hinge and screen to reduce the creasing problem. Therefore, the foldable iPhone will be the "first crease-free foldable smartphone on the market."
Sources indicate that Foxconn has set up a dedicated production line for the foldable iPhone. This suggests the device has passed testing and entered the technical inspection phase in preparation for mass production.
The main display of the foldable iPhone is exclusively supplied by Samsung, but the panel structure, material processing, and coatings are designed by Apple. The hinge bearing system was developed by Apple in collaboration with Shin Zu Shing and Amphenol.
According to UDN , a crease-free display could give Apple a significant advantage over its competitors, especially since some companies have been producing foldable smartphones for years.
Finally, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that the foldable iPhone will utilize high-density battery technology, with a capacity of approximately 5,400-5,800 mAh.
