A report from ET News, reposted by MacRumors , claims Apple has ordered 22 million OLED panels from Samsung Display for its first foldable iPhone.
According to AppleInsider , this figure describes the split between the inner foldable screen and the outer secondary screen, meaning a total production of nearly 10 million complete devices after accounting for production efficiency that is not 100%.
These figures show that Apple has very high expectations for the foldable smartphone segment. With ambitions to sell nearly 10 million units, Apple seems to not only want to "test" the market but also want to dominate it immediately. It's important to emphasize that this segment is still a small part of the global smartphone market.
For comparison, the annual shipment volume of the entire foldable smartphone market is only in the tens of millions, representing a very small share of the total global volume.
"A shipment of nearly 10 million units would put Apple's first foldable iPhone on par with the entire existing segment. This signals an extremely bold strategy, or perhaps an overconfidence, that the Apple brand can instantly change the entire market," AppleInsider commented.
Based on rumors, Apple is expected to launch a foldable iPhone in 2026. Not only will it be the company's first foldable smartphone, the device will have first-of-its-kind features that will set it apart from its competitors.
According to data from JPMorgan, the foldable iPhone will be equipped with a 24 MP selfie camera under the screen. If the information is correct, this is the highest resolution for a foldable phone. For comparison, previous foldable Android smartphones only had 4-8 MP hidden cameras, which are not high quality.
The hidden camera resolution is increased to 24 MP, the 6-layer lens is likely to produce clearer selfies. This detail shows that Apple's engineering team has found a solution to improve the light transmission through the screen panel, helping the hidden camera have better quality.
Regarding the display, rumors say that Apple has solved the problem of creases that are often seen on foldable smartphones. On November 24, UDN cited a source from the supply chain who emphasized improvements in the hinge and screen to reduce creases. Therefore, the foldable iPhone will be "the first foldable smartphone on the market without a crease".
Sources said Foxconn has set up its own production line for the foldable iPhone. This shows that the device has passed the testing process and entered the technical inspection stage to prepare for mass production.
The main display of the foldable iPhone is exclusively supplied by Samsung, but the panel structure, material processing and coating are designed by Apple. The hinge bearing system is jointly developed by Apple with Shin Zu Shing and Amphenol.
According to UDN , a crease-free display could give Apple a huge advantage over its competitors, especially since some companies have been producing foldable smartphones for years.
Finally, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the foldable iPhone will use high-density battery technology, with a capacity of around 5,400-5,800 mAh.
