Since that day, football fans around the world have followed every one of his matches in the United States with the hope of seeing Messi shine at the world's biggest football tournament once again.
Messi is once again making a comeback as the reigning champion with the Argentine national team at the 2026 World Cup, much to the delight of his many fans. Four years have passed, M10 is four years older, his pace is somewhat slower, his face has more wrinkles, but his technical ball control, sharp assists, and goal-scoring shots remain as effective as ever with those magical feet.
Messi and his teammates will begin their title defense campaign in Group J against Austria, Algeria, and Jordan. None of the three opponents in Group J are really a match for the reigning champions.
Four years after Messi's departure, the Argentine national team still boasts top players like goalkeeper Martinez, defenders Molina, Otamendi, and Romero, midfielders Enzo Fernandez, Mac Allister, and De Paul, and forwards Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez. They are still playing at the level of world champions for top clubs in England, Spain, and Italy.
Of course, another name that cannot be overlooked in the history of the Argentine national team is coach Scaloni. Under his leadership, the Tango team became South American and World champions. Coach Scaloni always respected Messi, considering him the center of the team and accepting that Messi could simply walk around but would shine given the opportunity.
Looking at Argentina's squad for the 2026 World Cup , it's clear that the core team that won the championship four years ago has been largely retained by coach Scaloni. Perhaps the only absence is that of the "angel" on the left wing, Di Maria, who has announced his retirement from the national team. Argentina should have little difficulty securing first place in Group J. They even have the option of holding back their tactics for the knockout rounds.
Of the remaining three teams in Group J, Austria is the stronger team compared to the other two. Under the guidance of German coach Ralf Rangnick, the Austrian team employs a scientific and disciplined style of play. They employ high-pressure pressing across the entire field. However, the Austrian team lacks standout players.
Familiar names like midfielders Sabitzer and Laimer, and striker Arnautovic, are past their prime. However, with a team that possesses a clear tactical approach, a tight playing style, and especially international experience, the Austrian team is still considered stronger than the other two teams in Group J, Algeria and Jordan.

In the Algerian national team, the most notable name is striker Mahrez, who previously played for Manchester City. Other players currently playing for European clubs include Amoura and Gouiri. Like other teams from the African continent, Algeria is a team that emphasizes speed.
The tactical formation this team often employs is 4-4-2, but they quickly switch to a 3-4-2-1 depending on the game situation. Looking at the schedule, Algeria will face Austria in their final match of Group J on June 28th, and this could be considered a decisive match for the second qualifying spot in the knockout round.
For Vietnamese football fans, Jordanian football is no stranger. Most recently, at the U23 Asian Championship finals in early 2026, the Vietnam U23 team won 2-0 against the Jordan U23 team. It's worth remembering that the Jordan U23 team that lost to Vietnam included players from the Jordan national team when they first participated in the World Cup.
Clearly, the team from West Asia arrived at the World Cup as an underdog. For the Jordanian players, reaching the biggest stage in world football and competing against the legend Messi is already a great joy. It will be very difficult for Jordan to spring a surprise in this group. For a newcomer like Jordan, simply scoring a goal in the World Cup would be a success.
