Following Merino's impressive performances at Euro 2024, manager Mikel Arteta decided to sign the 28-year-old to the Emirates Stadium, despite him having only one year left on his contract with Real Sociedad.

According to Spanish media reports, Arsenal have agreed to a transfer fee of €38.5 million, including an initial fee of €33.5 million and an additional €5 million in add-ons. Merino's contract with Arsenal will also be for four years with an option to extend for one year.
Merino played in every match for Spain during their Euro 2024 championship run. He scored the crucial winning goal against Germany in the 119th minute of the quarter-final to help Spain overcome the host nation 2-1.
Previously, the 28-year-old joined Real Sociedad from Newcastle six years ago. He has made 242 appearances for the La Liga club, scoring 27 goals and helping them win the Copa del Rey in 2020.
Merino rose through the ranks at Osasuna before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2016, where he won the DFB-Pokal under manager Thomas Tuchel. In the 2017-2018 season, he moved to Newcastle under manager Rafael Benitez and only made 14 Premier League appearances.

Signing the 28-year-old will strengthen Arsenal's midfield. After completing his medical , Merino will play in the number 8 position.
Conversely, manager Arteta's team is looking to sell some players before the transfer window closes next week, with striker Eddie Nketiah being the first name to leave the Emirates Stadium. The player hasn't made an official appearance for Arsenal since the beginning of the year.
Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement with Arsenal for a fee of around €35 million plus add-ons. The English striker has not yet agreed to personal terms, but the deal could be completed in the next few days.
Arsenal opened the season with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wolves. They will travel to Aston Villa for their second Premier League match at 11:30 PM on August 24th at Villa Park.
