Cinnamon is one of the valuable medicinal herbs in traditional medicine, possessing warming properties, antibacterial effects, and the ability to treat colds. Furthermore, modern medical research also shows that cinnamon has many therapeutic effects and can help prevent cancer.

According to Dr. Huynh Tan Vu ( University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3), Eastern medicine considers cinnamon one of the four precious herbs, along with ginseng, deer antler, cinnamon, and rehmannia. Vietnam is one of the countries that grows a lot of cinnamon.

Cinnamon leaves and bark are commonly used to make essential oil. The outer layer of cinnamon bark is called cinnamon bark; after removing the rough outer bark, the inner layer is called cinnamon heart. Cinnamon bark is rich in tannins (5%) and contains essential oil (1.2-1.5%), and cinnamon essential oil is rich in cinnamic aldehyde (80.85%).

According to Doctor Vu, ancient medical texts indicate that all parts of the cinnamon tree are used as medicine and have various therapeutic effects. Traditional medicine has a wide range of uses for cinnamon-based remedies. Today, according to the latest research, cinnamon-based remedies can help prevent diabetes, reduce the risk of heart disease, have strong anti-inflammatory properties, protect the brain from dementia and cognitive decline, prevent cancer, treat acne, eliminate bad breath, and are good for the skin.

In daily life, cinnamon has many applications such as a spice, for health care, herbal sachets, home fumigation, shoe insoles, etc.

The medicinal effects of cinnamon

To help you sleep better : You can burn cinnamon essential oil and place it in a corner of the room. This will create a diffusion mechanism, filling the room with a distinctive herbal scent and making it easier to fall asleep soundly.

Treating joint pain : Cinnamon soaked in alcohol can be used as a massage oil to relieve joint pain effectively. However, caution is needed as excessive use can cause skin burns due to the heat of cinnamon. A few drops of cinnamon essential oil mixed with coconut oil can also be used as a massage oil to help relax and loosen muscles.

Combating bad breath: You can use dried cinnamon bark or cinnamon essential oil. The aroma of cinnamon will help you have fresh breath. Chewing a piece of dried cinnamon also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to eliminate cavities and other causes of bad breath.

To relieve flu and cold symptoms : Add a few drops of cinnamon essential oil to a small bowl of hot water and steam your face to clear the airways, relieve nasal congestion, and make breathing easier.

For soaking, bathing, and steaming : To fragrance and warm the body, and to relax the entire body.

Cinnamon, a spice in many delicious dishes, is good for digestion: The fragrant, spicy, and sweet taste of cinnamon helps to reduce the fishy smell of fish and meat, making dishes more flavorful and stimulating the digestive system. Besides making dishes more appealing, the essential oils in cinnamon also help the digestive system fight bacteria, add warmth to dishes, dispel coldness, and help prevent stomach aches.

"However, caution is needed and moderation is key. Using too much cinnamon can irritate the mouth and lips. People allergic to cinnamon should avoid dishes seasoned with cinnamon, and excessive consumption should be avoided because cinnamon is considered warming and can disrupt the yin-yang balance in the body," Dr. Vu noted.

Other applications of cinnamon

Cinnamon scented sachets: Musty odors from clothes or damp walls, air conditioner smells, car odors… unpleasant smells that affect the fresh air around you will be eliminated with cinnamon scented sachets. Cinnamon essential oil has antibacterial, antifungal, and parasite-repelling properties.

Shoe insoles: Deodorize, warm the soles of the feet, and help prevent athlete's foot, also known as Candida albicans.

"Cinnamon is not only a valuable medicinal herb but also has diverse applications in daily life. However, when using cinnamon in treating illnesses, it is necessary to consult with medical professionals," Dr. Vu advised.
