Having lived for 88 years (born in 1937), with 60 years as a doctor and nearly 50 years dedicated to pediatric surgery, Dr. Tran Thanh Trai's name is inextricably linked to the development of the city's medical sector: a doctor from the old regime who remained in the city after reunification, one of the first doctors in pediatric surgery, and a doctor who contributed his expertise to some of the first famous surgeries: the separation of the conjoined twins Song-Pha, Viet-Duc, etc.
He was also a representative of Ho Chi Minh City's intellectuals in the 10th National Assembly delegation, contributing many insightful opinions.
Dr. Tran Thanh Trai also has many fond memories with Tuoi Tre newspaper. Not only did he readily offer advice and interviews whenever requested, but he also participated throughout the "For a Brighter Future" surgical campaign organized by the newspaper as part of the "For a Better Tomorrow" program from 1996 to 1998.

He traveled with the surgical team throughout the villages of the Central Highlands and Northwest Vietnam, performing dozens of surgeries every day, forgetting to eat, drink, rest, or sleep.
"After each surgery, a baby will no longer have a cleft palate, a smile will be fuller, and a life will be brighter. So let's just keep going a little longer…," the doctor said when he heard reporters pleading for him to rest.

In our final meetings, even while lying in his hospital bed, Dr. Tran Thanh Trai still reminded us: " Tuoi Tre newspaper should organize more programs to reach remote areas; there are still many people who need our help. If I'm healthy, I'll go; if I'm not, my students will go."
The memorial service for the doctor is being held at his home: 734 National Highway 1A, Binh Hung Hoa Ward, Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City.
