Lesson 3: The countryside "gets a new look"

The achievements resulting from the new rural development program nationwide, and in Tien Giang province in particular, are immense. The appearance of rural areas has been fundamentally transformed with a fresher, more modern look.

Lesson 1: The Beginning

Lesson 2: The systematic steps

The most noticeable impact of building new rural areas is the significant changes in transportation infrastructure, not only on central roads, but also on village and hamlet roads, which have been renovated.

A DREAM COME TRUE

Looking at the reality, it is clear that through the National Target Program for building new rural areas, along with the policy of focusing investment on transportation infrastructure to create momentum for rapid and sustainable development, the transportation landscape of Tien Giang has changed significantly in recent years.

People in the eastern part of the province are very excited that Provincial Road 864 has been put into operation.
People in the eastern part of Tien Giang province are very excited that provincial road 864 has been put into operation.

Besides the projects included in the annual rural development plan, the province focuses on investing in transportation infrastructure to create a synchronized transportation network from the provincial level to the grassroots, connecting within the region and inter-regionally, thereby creating momentum for future development.

Thanks to this, many major transportation projects have been planned and put into operation, much to the delight of the people. Standing before the recently opened Provincial Road 864 connecting the eastern part of the province, Mr. Vo Van Nhan (Tan Thuan hamlet, Xuan Dong commune, Cho Gao district) excitedly said that for decades, Xuan Dong was an "island" commune, bordered to the south by the Tien River, to the north by the Cho Gao canal, and to the east by Hoa Dinh commune, making the transportation of goods and travel for the people very difficult. In 2000, the commune received investment from higher authorities for District Road 34, connecting it with Hoa Dinh commune to reach Cho Gao town.

When the New Rural Development program began, many inter-hamlet roads in the area were paved or paved, making travel more convenient for the people. But what's particularly noteworthy is that recently, Provincial Road 864, which runs through the commune, has been completed with investment from the province, including a new bridge over the Cho Gao canal. This is a source of great joy for the people of Xuan Dong commune.

For generations, the people of the commune have relied primarily on ferries and boats to travel to My Tho City. During rainy and stormy days, when the tide rises, everyone worries; students going to school and workers going to work often have to turn back; patients wanting to go to the hospital have to wait for the ferry; not to mention the difficulties in transporting goods, as crossing the river requires the ferry. Now, with the completion of the new road and the construction of sturdy bridges, the people truly feel like a dream has come true.

The new road not only facilitates the transportation of goods and travel, but also opens up many opportunities for children to go to school safely, for farmers to easily bring their agricultural products to market, and for household economies to develop. “Local people are very grateful for the attention and leadership of all levels and sectors that have created conditions for our commune to have such a new look today. We are determined to excel in production and business, contributing to building a more prosperous and beautiful homeland,” said Mr. Vo Van Nhan.

Sharing the joy of many people at the new look of their homeland, especially seeing the increasingly smooth and modern transportation network, Mr. Kieu Manh Quan (Tan Phong commune, Cai Lay district) told us that Tan Phong island commune has now donned a "new coat." This is thanks to the policy of building new rural areas in recent years.

But what's remarkable is that since the Tan Phong bridge opened in April 2025, the long-held dream of the people has finally come true. Tan Phong is a commune formed from several small islands, with a complex network of canals and waterways, difficult roads, and no electricity. To reach the commune center, people had to travel by ferry, making life very difficult for them.

Thanks to the attention of provincial and district leaders, and the efforts of the local government and people, for many years, through the New Rural Development program, Tan Phong has received investment in many infrastructure projects such as electricity for lighting and production, paved roads, asphalt roads, and embankments to prevent landslides, with a total investment capital.

Today, the people of Tan Phong are honored to receive additional investment in the Tan Phong bridge, costing hundreds of billions of dong. Thus, from today onwards, people will be able to travel to various places more conveniently, patients will receive timely emergency care without having to wait for ferries; and agricultural products will be purchased by traders at higher prices.

“From now on, we only need to focus on enriching our families and building our community together, as there are no longer the obstacles and difficulties we faced before. In the future, with its pristine terrain, cool climate, and lush fruit orchards, we will work together to develop Tan Phong into a commune that thrives in tourism and is a very livable place,” said Mr. Kieu Manh Quan.

THE COUNTRY ROAD IS SMOOTH AND WIDE

Overall, in the field of transportation infrastructure investment, Tien Giang has focused on investing in many large-scale transportation projects with regional and inter-regional connectivity, such as: Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway, Cao Lanh - An Huu Expressway, My Thuan 2 Bridge, Rach Mieu 2 Bridge, upgrading and expanding Cho Gao Canal, National Highway 50, My Loi Bridge, Provincial Road 864 (road along the Tien River), and developing urban and rural road systems to gradually contribute to completing the transportation infrastructure system and building new rural areas.

One of the notable highlights is Tien Giang's focus on investing in transportation infrastructure, connecting island communes with the mainland, such as Tan Thanh commune (Tan Phu Dong district), Ngu Hiep commune (Cai Lay district), and most recently, Tan Phong commune (Cai Lay district)...

From an economic perspective, Tien Giang's investment in transportation infrastructure over the past years has led to increased growth in the transportation sector in the province. Specifically, the volume of goods transported has increased by an average of 7.4% per year, the turnover of goods has increased by an average of 5.9% per year, the volume of passenger transport has increased by an average of 5.7% per year, and the turnover of passengers has increased by an average of 6.2% per year…

From the perspective of the results of implementing the National Target Program on New Rural Development, according to the Coordinating Office of the National Target Program on New Rural Development in Tien Giang province, after 15 years of implementing the program, through various forms of mobilizing resources from the central and local budgets and integrating capital from other target programs in the area, especially with the participation and contribution of labor and materials from the people, Tien Giang has now completed and put into use many essential projects.

In the transportation sector, across 135 communes, 369 commune roads with a total length of over 834 km have been constructed using asphalt and cement concrete, meeting at least Class B standards according to TCVN 10380:2014; 1,088 hamlet and inter-hamlet roads with a total length of nearly 1,733 km have been hardened; 4,502 alleyways and village roads with a total length of nearly 3,588 km have been hardened; and 54 main internal field roads with a total length of nearly 91 km have been hardened to meet standards. All roads have been invested in to ensure convenient year-round transportation of goods…

Once transportation infrastructure is invested in, seamless connectivity will be a fundamental prerequisite for creating livelihoods and jobs for rural people. From there, many production and business models for rural residents will have the opportunity to emerge.
