According to Cruise Hive , every passenger on the Carnival Splendour cruise ship, departing from Sydney, Australia on June 2nd, received a dress code notice before the 8-night journey to the South Pacific. The cruise's first destination is the beautiful island of Lifou in New Caledonia. Passengers are advised to avoid wearing anything too revealing, such as two-piece bikinis, thongs, monokinis, and mankinis, when visiting the island. Nudity is also strictly prohibited. The dress code applies not only to beaches but also to all public areas on the island, such as markets, churches, and community spaces.
This cruise line specifically points out that Lifou is a destination where local customs require modest attire, a rule that has been in place for a long time. Lifou, an island of tribes, is home to indigenous people with a culture based on respect, and in many cases, is very religious.
Local communities in these areas also require visitors to wear one-piece swimsuits or traditional full-body coverings and not bikinis or monokinis when at the beach.

Carnival warns travelers that disrespecting local customs could affect its ability to continue including Lifou on future itineraries. While Carnival generally allows casual daytime wear, the airline's website states that passengers should still ensure their attire shows respect for other passengers and is appropriate for the context.
The cruise line's swimwear policy has become a hot topic of debate among passengers online. "Wear whatever you want," one Reddit user wrote. Another argued that revealing swimwear is already quite common on cruises, noting that "someone wears that kind of swimsuit on deck all day and night." Others felt guests should be more mindful in family-friendly areas. "Maybe swimwear should be worn on adult-only excursions and when using the adult-only hot tub," one commenter suggested. "Carnival is for families, and there are lots of kids on these cruises ," another said.
Controversy also erupted regarding Lifou. "If you don't like it, just stay on board and sit by the pool," another person emphasized the importance of respecting the customs of other countries when traveling. "The local community has specifically requested these dress code regulations, as inappropriate swimwear can cause cultural conflict and could lead to a permanent ban from Lifou cruises. In short, bring a modest one-piece swimsuit and a sun protection shirt or jacket. Respect local customs. It's their country, their laws," one commenter remarked.
