To address this problem, RTL News partnered with Endava and Google Cloud to develop two main AI systems called “Hot Topic Discoverer” and “Consistency Checker”.
The first system , "Hot Topic Discoverer," is a tool for identifying trending topics. This AI agent continuously analyzes data, articles, and trends across platforms to assess the importance of each story. Instead of relying entirely on manual evaluation, newsrooms have an additional system to help determine which content should be prioritized.
According to RTL News, AI agents can assess the spread, timeliness, and relevance of a topic across different publishing platforms. This helps newsrooms respond more quickly to rapidly evolving events in the digital environment.
Meanwhile, the "Consistency Checker" is considered the most important tool in RTL News' AI strategy. This system is responsible for checking consistency and detecting errors in content before publication.
Instead of reading the entire article in a general way, this AI agent will break down the content into individual sentences to check data, compare information, and detect anomalies. According to Endava, the system can achieve an error detection rate of over 99%, with an average processing time of about 4 seconds for a long article.
This is seen as a solution to limit "data illusions" —the phenomenon where AI creates false information, which is one of the biggest risks when applying artificial intelligence in journalism.
Despite cutting hundreds of staff, the newsroom continues to operate efficiently.
The increased application of AI at RTL News is taking place in parallel with RTL Deutschland's major restructuring strategy. In early 2026, the media group announced cuts of approximately 600 jobs in Germany , with RTL News alone accounting for around 230 positions. According to German media, this is one of RTL's largest restructuring efforts in recent years.
RTL stated that the staff reduction is part of a strategy to digitize and optimize operating costs. With traditional advertising revenue under significant pressure, the group aims to shift resources to technology systems and AI-based content production processes.
Notably, RTL News did not choose the path of having AI "write for" journalists. Instead, AI is used as a behind-the-scenes support layer in the newsroom to reduce technical and repetitive tasks.
AI agents help newsrooms shorten data processing time, quickly identify important topics, and assist with content review before publication. As a result, even with a leaner organizational structure, the newsroom's operational speed is maintained.
According to RTL News, the goal of applying AI is to free up reporters and editors more time for higher-value tasks such as investigation, verification, and in-depth content development.
Tatjana Anisimov, Head of Content Innovation and AI Products at RTL News, said the AI system helps newsrooms focus on more important stories and improve decision-making speed in the digital news environment.
The involvement of AI in data processing also helps reduce pressure on newsrooms in a context where the volume of information is increasing but human resources are no longer as abundant as before.

Despite its increased use of AI agents, RTL News maintains the principle that humans retain ultimate control before content is published.
According to this model, the AI agent only plays a supporting role in processing and analyzing data, while editorial decisions remain with humans. This is considered a mandatory requirement to ensure the accuracy and credibility of the newsroom.
In reality, AI cannot yet replace the journalist's ability to assess social context, think critically, or possess practical experience. However, this technology is dramatically changing how newsrooms operate.
The case of RTL News shows that future newsrooms may no longer rely on large, traditional staffs. Instead, a leaner team will work in conjunction with continuously operating AI systems to process the massive volume of information each day.
