Typhoon Mekkhala is currently active in the waters east of the Philippines. This is the seventh typhoon to form in the Northwest Pacific region in 2026.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (Department of Hydro-Meteorology, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), this afternoon (June 22), Typhoon Mekkhala reached a strength of level 15, with gusts exceeding level 17, and was located approximately 550km east of the northeastern mainland of Luzon Island (Philippines).
Forecasts indicate that in the next 12-24 hours, Typhoon Mekkhala will move west-northwest at a speed of approximately 15 km/h, potentially strengthening to Category 16 (super typhoon), with gusts exceeding Category 17. Afterward, the typhoon will change direction, moving north, then northeast towards the southern waters of Japan, and gradually weaken.
Regarding marine weather, forecasts indicate areas where large waves are likely to affect ships, including: the Gulf of Tonkin from June 22-25 and June 30-July 1; the northern South China Sea (including the Hoang Sa Special Economic Zone) from June 24-25; and the sea area between Gia Lai and Ca Mau , and the central and southern South China Sea (including the Truong Sa Special Economic Zone) from June 23-26.
Additionally, the sea areas of Ca Mau - An Giang , the Gulf of Thailand, and the central and southern South China Sea (including the Spratly Islands) should be aware of the possibility of large waves during tornadoes and strong gusts of wind.

Regarding weather on land, on June 22nd, the hottest area was from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang City and the eastern provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak. Hot and intensely hot weather continued with temperatures at 1 PM generally ranging from 36-38 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 38 degrees Celsius in some places such as: Ky Anh (Ha Tinh) 38.2 degrees Celsius, Dong Hoi (Quang Tri) 38.7 degrees Celsius, Dong Ha (Quang Tri) 39.3 degrees Celsius, and Tuy Hoa (Dak Lak) 38.2 degrees Celsius. The hot weather in Central Vietnam is forecast to continue for several more days.
In the northern provinces, despite the widespread heatwave, the morning of June 22nd was cloudy, and the intensity of the sun decreased significantly. The hot area narrowed to only the southern part of the Northern Delta, with temperatures not excessively high, fluctuating between 35-36 degrees Celsius. This was due to the low-pressure trough that had caused rain in the northern mountainous region earlier that morning shifting to this area.
Forecasts indicate that on June 23rd, this low-pressure trough will move away, and widespread heatwaves will return to Northern Vietnam. The peak of the heatwave will occur around June 24th, with temperatures in Northern Vietnam generally ranging from 36-39 degrees Celsius, and exceeding 39 degrees Celsius in some areas. From June 25th, the low-pressure trough will move back towards Northern Vietnam, bringing rain and gradually lowering temperatures. By June 26th, the widespread heatwave will essentially end in Northern Vietnam.
