According to Sport , the 2024/25 Copa del Rey has one of the lowest prize money amounts compared to other prestigious tournaments in the top five European leagues this season. The figure pales in comparison to the FIFA Club World Cup or the Champions League.
It's not even comparable to a win for Barcelona in the Champions League knockout stage. In the Champions League, Barcelona could earn around 100 million euros in prize money if they reach the final. The winner of La Liga this season will also receive over 60 million euros in prize money.
Why is there such a large disparity in prize money between the Copa del Rey and other competitions? Media and commercial appeal is only part of the reason. Since the Spanish Football Federation changed the format, the prize money for the entire tournament is distributed to all participating teams, not just concentrated in the two finalists.
The revenue from television rights for the Copa del Rey each season is approximately 33 million euros. This amount is divided into several branches. First, 90% goes to professional football (around 29.5 million euros), and the remaining 10% goes to the amateur and semi-professional teams participating in the tournament (over 3 million euros).
With €29.5 million allocated to professional football, 90% goes to La Liga clubs and 10% to teams in the second division (Segunda). This means approximately €26.5 million goes to the 20 La Liga teams. From this amount, 50% is distributed equally among the 20 La Liga teams, with the remaining amount going to teams that progress further, such as Barcelona and Real Madrid.
