A few days ago, a man in Sichuan, China filmed a rare scene of two suns appearing at the same time. He saw two suns hidden in the clouds.
Immediately after the video was posted, it sparked heated debates online. People left comments like: “No wonder the weather is so hot these days”, “So is the legend of the nine suns true?”, “Are we in a sci-fi novel?”
So why does there appear to be many suns at the same time?
It's optical in the atmosphere called "Parhelion" (False Sun). Optical phenomena occur when the sun approaches the horizon.
When a virtual sun appears, light is refracted through ice crystals in the air and forms halos like the real sun.
Parhelion usually appears at an inclination of 22 degrees to the sun, due to the angle of refraction of the light rays.
