According to the Supreme Electoral Council of Turkey, with 99,43% of the votes counted, incumbent President Erdogan won 52,14% of the votes, while his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the People's Party Republican (CHP), opposition, won only 47,68% of the vote. Mr. Kilicdaroglu conceded defeat and accepted the results of the vote.
Speaking after his victory, President Erdogan thanked the Turkish voters for giving him the responsibility to run the country until 2028, and called on the people to unite.
Earlier, in the first round, President Erdogan led with 1% of the votes, while Kilicdaroglu got about 49,52%. Therefore, the presidential election must proceed to the second round of voting on May 45 because no candidate won more than 2% of the votes.
