At Cannes 2023, currently taking place in France, only one Vietnamese film is participating: Inside the Golden Cocoon by filmmaker Pham Thien An, competing in the Directors' Fortnight category. After its premiere to critics, filmmakers, and audiences on May 24th in France, the film received widespread acclaim.
A scene from the movie Inside the Golden Cocoon
The film tells the story of Thien, a man who must bring the body of his sister-in-law back to his hometown after she died in a car accident in Saigon. Whether he likes it or not, he must take his nephew, Dao, with him, a child who miraculously survived the accident. Back home, he seeks out his older brother, who had disappeared many years earlier, to return the child. This journey leads Thien to reflect deeply on life.
This is Pham Thien An's feature film debut, and critics have noted that, despite its length, it brings to the screen many scenes and people of Saigon and Vietnam. Variety magazine commented that the film portrays "mysterious Vietnamese countryside landscapes," and overall, it is a work with "poetic quality."
Most international reviews other than Variety , such as those in the British film magazine Screen Daily , or the independent film review site indieWire , also gave the film glowing reviews.
Jeremy Chua, the project's producer, praised the film, saying that beyond its poetic quality, Inside the Golden Cocoon is "a metaphorical labyrinth of everyday discomforts and splendors," and "a pursuit of modern desires." IndieWire published a lengthy article analyzing the characters and themes in the film, with the headline praising Inside the Golden Cocoon as "a captivating Vietnamese film."
Screen Daily commented that this work was conceived and nurtured by Pham Thien An from the experiences and ideas of his previous short films, such as Stay Awake, Be Ready (2019). "This is an excellent debut; a captivating, provocative, and mysterious work." The newspaper stated that the film has won over audiences, including the most discerning viewers at the Cannes Film Festival 2023.
