The cargo ship Bohwa Amoy docked at New Mangaluru port on August 13, carrying 7,141 tonnes of raw cashew nuts from Africa to India.
On August 16, the captain called to report that a member of the crew, the ship's chief chef, had suddenly collapsed due to chest pain.
"We quickly shifted him to Athena Hospital and Dr MS Puthran took over the case," The Hindu quoted Sai Sharan Kottari, partner of maritime service ETA Shipping and Logistics, as saying.
At Athena Hospital, the Vietnamese patient was admitted to the intensive care unit with extremely low blood flow to the heart.
On August 19, the patient was transferred to Kasturba Medical College Hospital, and the coronary angioplasty was performed successfully on August 20.
Dr M. Padmanabha Kamath of Kasturba Medical College Hospital said it was fortunate that the patient did not have a heart attack while the ship was at sea.
The Vietnamese chef is expected to be discharged from the hospital on August 23 and can return to Vietnam when his health condition is stable.
"The New Mangalore port authorities, immigration, customs and health departments quickly provided timely assistance, which enabled the crew members to be saved," Mr. Kottari said.
