Xavi admitted his mistake in not maintaining high standards in the Barcelona dressing room. |
During a presentation at ESIC University, Xavi candidly stated: "I started my coaching career at Barca with high expectations for both the players and the club. My mistake was maintaining those high standards for only one year, from the time I arrived until we won La Liga and the Super Cup. After that, discipline and focus started to wane, and I didn't do well enough to prevent that."
Xavi admitted that standards in the Barcelona dressing room had declined, with players losing their proper attitude, respect, and fighting spirit, leading to the team winning no titles in his final season. He called this a major lesson, a self-criticism to help him grow.
Xavi took over at the end of 2021 with the task of restoring order to a Barcelona team struggling both financially and in terms of form. His influence was immediately apparent. Barcelona regained the La Liga title and won the Spanish Super Cup for the second consecutive season.
However, those positive signs soon faded. The 2023/24 season saw Barcelona's performance decline across all competitions, confidence plummeted, and conflicts arose regarding tactics and intensity. Tensions between the coaching staff and players became increasingly apparent, and at the end of the season, Xavi was sacked.
Since leaving Barcelona, Xavi has chosen patience over haste, rejecting attractive offers to wait for the right project. He has maintained contact with the technical staff, studied modern tactics, and prepared for his return.
