Dr. Hoang Vinh Ha, Director of Professional Services at Hanoi-Dong Nai Eye Hospital (Tam Hiep Ward, Dong Nai Province), said: To have healthy and beautiful eyes, first and foremost, a proper and scientific diet is necessary. Dark green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, along with foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E found in carrots, pumpkins, oranges, and lemons, are important nutrients that help fight oxidation and protect the retina. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids, abundant in salmon, tuna, and walnuts, also help reduce the risk of dry eyes and macular degeneration. Drinking enough water every day will maintain eye moisture and reduce dryness and irritation.
Getting enough sleep (7-8 hours a day) not only keeps your body healthy but also allows your eyes to rest and recover after a day's work. When going outside, especially in strong sunlight, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays – a cause of cataracts and many other eye diseases. Also, avoid rubbing your eyes with dirty hands, as this can easily lead to infection.
In the context of work and study closely tied to screens, the eyes are often overworked. To mitigate this, experts recommend the "20-20-20 rule." This means that after every 20 minutes of working with a screen, look away 20 feet (approximately 6 meters) for 20 seconds. Adjusting the room and screen lighting appropriately, and maintaining a distance of 50-60cm when using a computer will also help reduce eye strain.
Cleaning the eyes with saline solution, especially after prolonged exposure to dust and dirt, will help keep the eyes healthy. Those who work in air-conditioned environments or frequently experience dry eyes can also use moisturizing eye drops. When participating in activities that involve collisions or contact with chemicals, protective eyewear should be worn to minimize injury.
