The reality of marine environmental pollution in general, and in Khanh Hoi commune in particular, is a persistent and pressing issue. Every day, the sea has to "endure" a large amount of waste, mostly plastic waste, household waste, and animal carcasses. When the sea is rough, a large amount of waste washes ashore, causing air pollution and seriously affecting the living environment.
Ms. Huynh My Le, a resident who has lived along the coast for over 30 years, shared: "Every time the sea is rough, a lot of trash washes ashore, causing a foul smell, especially animal carcasses. We coastal residents are still conscious of disposing of trash in designated areas, but we can't control the amount of trash that washes ashore from the sea."
Faced with the pollution problem, the People's Committee of Khanh Hoi commune, in coordination with the Fisheries Sub-Department, the Border Guard Post, and youth union members, organized campaigns to collect waste at the estuary and market area. Activities such as distributing garbage bags, handing out leaflets, and raising awareness about protecting the marine environment were regularly implemented to improve people's understanding.
Mr. Quach Hoang Khai, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: "Every year, the commune always cooperates with the Fisheries Sub-Department to organize propaganda activities to raise awareness among fishermen about protecting the marine environment and sorting plastic waste. In addition, we cooperate with the Border Guard Station to organize 'Sea Cleanup Day' activities and distribute waste bags to fishermen. The situation of waste in the sea has improved significantly compared to before the implementation of these propaganda activities."
Members of the Youth Union in Khanh Hoi commune, together with the Khanh Hoi Border Guard Station, organized the "Beach Cleanup Day" activity.
However, according to Mr. Khai, this work still faces many difficulties, such as a lack of means to collect waste at sea and the absence of specific regulations for handling cases of littering at sea. Currently, the locality is using a budget of about 13 million VND per month to hire a waste collection team, including health insurance and services. After collection, the waste is transported to a collection point and then sent to a processing plant.
Ms. Ho My Le, 57 years old, a member of the waste collection team in Khanh Hoi commune, shared: “The amount of waste here fluctuates around 35 large trash cans per day, sometimes even more, around 50 cans. For me, this job is hard but extremely meaningful, contributing to protecting the marine environment. I only hope that people will be more aware and practice putting trash in the bins to keep the environment green, clean, and beautiful.”
Ms. Ho My Le, 57 years old, has been a member of the waste collection team in Khanh Hoi commune for the past 3 years.
Youth union members and young people in the commune have always been a pioneering force in activities to protect the marine environment. The commune's youth union has implemented many programs such as: "Green Sunday," "Volunteer Saturday - Let's Clean the Sea," organizing branch meetings, launching campaigns to clean up and collect coastal waste and plastic waste.
Mr. Vo Phuc Nhi, Deputy Secretary of the Commune Youth Union, said: “We have organized more than 10 beach cleanup campaigns with the participation of hundreds of Youth Union members, students, and local people. We collect and process hundreds of kilograms of coastal waste each month. However, we still face difficulties such as: lack of funding, lack of protective equipment, and unfavorable weather conditions. In the future, the Commune Youth Union will continue to maintain and expand volunteer activities, strengthen propaganda work through videos , social media, extracurricular activities, and build rapid response teams of young volunteers when pollution occurs.”
