A new direction to increase the value of agricultural products.

Established through the merger of communes that had achieved New Rural Area standards at various levels, Bien Thuong has a favorable foundation in terms of agricultural production, traditional crafts, and local human resources. Implementing the OCOP program, the locality focuses on directing the development of production models based on local advantages, while simultaneously promoting the application of science and technology in cultivation and livestock farming to create high-quality products that meet market demands.

During the period 2019-2024, Bien Thuong commune had 7 products recognized as OCOP 3-star or higher, including: Khuong Dao grilled goat sausage, Duyen Bac honey, Bao Thao Nga ginseng tea, Long Hung rice vermicelli, Dung Truong honey, Tinh Huan lotus seeds, and Loc Thinh glutinous rice; among them, Loc Thinh glutinous rice was recognized as a 4-star OCOP product. In 2025, the commune will have one more product registered as a 3-star OCOP product: RUCO wine from Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh's household in Dong Lu village. The commune's OCOP products not only meet the consumption needs within the province but also gradually expand the market to neighboring localities, contributing to increasing people's income and affirming the prestige and brand of Bien Thuong's distinctive agricultural products.

Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh, owner of Chinh Phuong winery, shared: “With the desire to continue the family's traditional craft and bring the flavors of our homeland closer to consumers, I have researched and learned winemaking techniques from many places, combining family traditions to create a distinctive guava wine, a blend of handcrafted glutinous rice wine and ripe guavas grown on our own land.”

To create breakthroughs in agricultural production, Bien Thuong commune has promoted land consolidation and concentration, forming concentrated commodity production areas; implementing land exchange, expanding large plots, and applying mechanization and automation to production, thereby increasing productivity, reducing costs, and improving product quality. Along with this, high-tech agricultural production models are encouraged to develop. Many households and production facilities have invested in drip irrigation systems, greenhouses, and net houses, applying quality management and food safety processes according to VietGAP standards. This is an important foundation for the locality to develop high-quality OCOP products that meet the increasingly stringent requirements of the market. The commune also focuses on investing in improving infrastructure serving production, such as internal field roads, irrigation systems, and auxiliary facilities for concentrated farming and livestock areas. Many key products such as glutinous rice, honey, rice vermicelli, lotus seeds, etc., are being developed as commercial goods, linked to traceability and the establishment of quality standards.

Developing OCOP in depth.

Entering the 2026-2030 period, Bien Thuong commune has identified the development of OCOP products as a selective, quality-enhancing, and sustainable approach, linked to the goal of achieving advanced new rural commune standards by 2028. Accordingly, the locality will focus on re-certifying products with potential and stable markets such as glutinous rice with betel nut kernels, dried lotus seeds, honey, and rice vermicelli; while simultaneously developing new products based on the advantages of the raw material area and the production practices of the people, such as peanut and sesame oil, turmeric starch, and rice flour cakes.

A notable shift is the mindset from "chasing after the number of stars" to focusing on the true value of products, including quality, food safety, design, product story, and long-term marketability. This is the key factor for OCOP to become a pillar of the rural economy , with economic efficiency as its overarching goal.

Chairman of Bien Thuong Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Van Hung, affirmed: "The development of OCOP (One Commune One Product) is inseparable from the New Rural Development program. On the contrary, OCOP is directly contributing to increasing people's income, creating local jobs, and promoting the development of household and cooperative economies. For OCOP to truly become a driving force for the rural economy, producers need to proactively innovate their thinking, invest in improving product quality, build brands, ensure traceability, and expand distribution channels; local authorities will continue to accompany and support them in training, trade promotion, and market connection."

Developing OCOP products in Bien Thuong commune is not just about products receiving star ratings, but about building a sustainable rural economic foundation, contributing to changing the face of the countryside and improving people's lives. This is also a suitable direction for the commune to realize the goal of building a new rural area, achieving harmonious development between economy, culture, and society in the new phase.
