Equality with AI

My decades of teaching experience have at least helped me realize one important thing in the context of the upheaval caused by the development of artificial intelligence (AI): that both teachers and students are equal before a third intelligence that is very superior, very objective, and cold.

Somewhere in the world , there have been cases of teachers getting angry because their students were using AI to complete their assignments. There have also been instances of students filing complaints with the university demanding a refund after discovering their professor was using AI to create teaching materials, as recently happened at Northeastern University (Massachusetts, USA).

Ultimately, it's illogical for teachers to forbid students from utilizing a superior third intelligence like AI for learning and homework. It's no different than forbidding students from reading books. What is the teacher's concern here? Is it that students will no longer need the teacher's solutions in class, since the solutions are already available from a third intelligence? And would that represent a significant loss of authority for the teacher?

Conversely, the students' reaction to their teacher using AI to prepare lessons is ultimately illogical. After all, the fact that the teacher is working with a superior third intelligence like AI to make lectures more profound and insightful is a good thing. So what is the essence of the students' reaction in this case? Is it because they think, "If the teacher uses AI like we do, why should we pay to learn from him?" And is this, in reality, an unacceptable disadvantage to the rights of the learners?

The answer to both cases doesn't lie in whether or not to use AI for assignments or lecture preparation, but rather in the underlying philosophy and how to use AI when doing those things.

Teachers, please don't be afraid of students using AI. Remember, in the history of human civilization, when books first appeared, people feared it would "damage people's memory"? When computers were used in the classroom, people feared "children wouldn't know how to do math by hand," and when Google Search became popular, people worried "children would become lazy thinkers, only knowing how to look things up." But the learning journey of young people continues to advance further. So, is it really necessary to view AI as a "threat to genuine learning"?

Students, please don't be averse to teachers using AI to prepare lessons. If you are allowed to use AI to learn faster and understand more deeply, why shouldn't teachers be allowed to use AI to make their lectures more insightful, multifaceted, and relevant? AI doesn't make lectures inferior. Believe that when teachers use AI responsibly and creatively, it's because they want to provide you with knowledge that is deepened, expanded, and supported by a superior third intelligence.

There is only one thing both teachers and students should fear, and should be fair and honest with each other in utilizing AI support: Don't use copy-paste, don't use AI as a substitute student or teacher. Students shouldn't easily let AI do their assignments for them. Teachers certainly shouldn't easily let AI prepare their lessons for them. AI doesn't prevent us from becoming human beings with dignity, identity, thoughts, and dreams of our own, unless we carelessly and recklessly lose them.
