Somewhere in the world , there have been stories of teachers getting angry because their students used AI to do their homework. There have also been cases of students filing a petition to the school to get their tuition refunded after discovering that their teachers used AI to prepare teaching materials, like the recent story at Northeastern University (Massachusetts, USA).
It is absurd for teachers to forbid students from using a third, super intelligence like AI to study and do homework. It is no different from forbidding students from reading books. What makes teachers worried here? Is it because students will no longer need the teacher’s solutions in class, because the solutions are already available from a third intelligence? And will that be a great loss of power for teachers?
On the contrary, the students' reaction when the teacher uses AI to prepare lessons is also unreasonable. Because the teacher working with a third superior intelligence like AI to make the lesson more profound and insightful is also a good thing. So what is the nature of the students' reaction in this case? Is it because they think that if the teacher also uses AI like me, why do I need to pay to study with him? And is that in fact an unacceptable loss of the rights of the learner?
The answer to both cases lies not in whether to use AI to do homework or prepare lectures, but in the philosophy itself and how to use AI to do those things.
Teachers, please don't be afraid of students using AI. Remember, in the history of human civilization, when books were first published, people were afraid that "it would damage human memory". When computers were used in the classroom, people were afraid that "children would not know how to do math by hand", when Google Search became popular, people were worried that "children would be lazy to think, only know how to look up". But the learning journey of young people is still going further and further. So is it necessary to consider AI as "a threat to true learning"?
Students, please do not be allergic to teachers using AI to prepare lessons. If you are allowed to use AI to learn faster and understand more deeply, why can't teachers use AI to make lessons sharper, more multi-dimensional, and more timely? AI does not make lessons worse. Believe that when teachers use AI responsibly and creatively, it is because they want to bring you knowledge that is deepened, expanded, and supported by a superior third intelligence.
There is only one thing that both teachers and students should fear, and both should be fair and equal in taking advantage of AI's support. That is, do not use copy-paste, do not use AI as a substitute learner or teacher. Students should not let AI do their homework for them. Teachers should not let AI prepare their lessons for them. AI does not prevent us from becoming human beings with dignity, identity, thoughts and dreams of our own, unless they easily and carelessly lose that.
