Stabilizing the market after the floods.

In recent days, prolonged heavy rains have caused severe flooding, isolating many areas in Khanh Hoa province, damaging crops and livestock, and significantly impacting the food supply chain. The reduced supply has led to localized price increases for vegetables and some fresh produce at local markets. In this context, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is implementing comprehensive solutions to stabilize the market and proactively coordinating the supply of goods from neighboring provinces to meet the needs of the people after the floods.

Vegetable prices have risen locally due to supply disruptions.

Observations at major markets such as Xom Moi (Nha Trang ward), Phuong Son (Tay Nha Trang ward), Vinh Hai (Bac Nha Trang ward), and Thanh Son market (Phan Rang ward) show a significant increase in vegetable prices after the floods, especially for leafy greens and fruits. Currently, cabbage ranges from 30,000 to 35,000 VND/kg, tomatoes 35,000 VND/kg, herbs 30,000 to 40,000 VND/kg, and gourds and pumpkins 30,000 VND/kg. The supply from growing areas within the province has decreased sharply due to prolonged flooding, while consumer demand has increased. Some other fresh produce items have also increased in price, such as: pork tenderloin 140,000 VND/kg; pork shoulder 110,000 - 120,000 VND/kg; and pork belly 130,000 - 140,000 VND/kg. Mackerel costs 200,000 - 250,000 VND/kg; fresh squid costs 180,000 - 220,000 VND/kg. Ms. Nguyen Thi Lanh (a small trader at Xom Moi market) shared: “The vegetable farms in the province were flooded, and the farmers lost everything. Trucks couldn't get in, so we had to source goods from Lam Dong or Ho Chi Minh City, which increased costs and resulted in higher prices.”

Along with the disruption of supply chains, the business operations of small traders have been significantly affected. Many people living in the flooded areas have to stay indoors to clean up their houses and are unable to return to the market. Others have temporarily closed their stalls due to excessively high import prices or disruptions in the supply of goods from their usual suppliers. Mr. Phan Tam, Head of the Phuong Son Market Management Board, said: “Currently, the market has 384 business households, operating normally. The supply of meat, fish, and dried goods remains stable; however, there is a localized shortage of vegetables due to severe damage to the growing areas. Some small traders in the flooded areas have not yet returned to business or have temporarily suspended operations due to low import costs and high prices. The management board is coordinating support to help stabilize their businesses as soon as possible.”

The price increase for some goods is also due to the severe flooding affecting major supermarket chains such as GO!, Lotte Mart, Mega Market, and many Bach Hoa Xanh warehouses in the Nha Trang area, preventing them from reopening. This has made the market more dependent on traditional markets and supplies from outside the province in the past few days. Mr. Tran Quoc Sanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, stated: “The flooding of some supermarkets and transit warehouses has temporarily disrupted the supply chain. From November 25th, these units are expected to reopen after the warehouse system is repaired and sanitation is completed, contributing to stabilizing market prices.”

Implementing solutions to stabilize the market.

In response to price fluctuations, the Department of Industry and Trade has activated a market stabilization plan, coordinating with retail businesses, wholesalers, and major distribution systems in Ho Chi Minh City, Lam Dong , and the Central Highlands provinces to increase the supply of goods. Vegetables, meat, seafood, beverages, and dried foods are prioritized for supply to the province in batches, especially for areas severely affected or at risk of shortages.

Simultaneously, the Market Management Department is intensifying inspections and supervision at markets, supermarkets, and retail outlets. Market management forces are required to check price listings, ensure goods are sold at the listed prices, and prevent unreasonable price increases, hoarding, or the mixing of substandard goods. Mr. Mai Hung Vi, Deputy Head of the Market Management Department, stated: “We have activated a 24/7 duty system, requiring teams to closely monitor their areas, especially in places with high purchasing power. All acts of exploiting the floods for profit will be severely punished.”

To date, although the roads are basically clear, the Department of Industry and Trade is still concerned about the risk of traffic congestion at some landslide points or the increased volume of vehicles in the days following the floods. To ensure that goods are not delayed, the Department of Industry and Trade has coordinated with the Provincial Police and the Traffic Police to implement a plan to prioritize green lanes for vehicles carrying essential goods; at the same time, it has deployed support forces to guide traffic at critical locations to ensure safe and continuous traffic flow. Mr. Nguyen Van Nhut - Director of the Department of Industry and Trade emphasized: “We have worked with major distribution systems to increase reserves of essential goods by 30 to 50%, ensuring a stable supply after the floods. At the same time, the province will deploy mobile sales points to bring price-stabilized goods to isolated areas, helping people access essential goods in a timely manner.”

According to a representative from the Department of Industry and Trade, once supermarkets reopen and traffic is fully restored, the market will gradually stabilize in the next few days. The Department of Industry and Trade is committed to continuously monitoring developments, regulating the supply of goods appropriately, and preventing shortages or unreasonable price increases after the natural disaster.
