During the New Year season, many people flock to the Ground Seoul exhibition hall in Insa-dong, central Seoul (South Korea), to try their luck with ShamAIn, a fortune-telling and destiny-predicting system based on artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

According to Hankook Ilbo on January 31, ShamAIn is a product providing AI-powered fortune-telling and destiny-prediction services, developed by a research team led by Professor Nam Taek-jin at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

Outwardly, ShamAIn is housed in a small shrine, just large enough to hold one person, with an altar inside fully equipped with everything typically found in a shaman's practice.

When someone seeking a fortune-telling enters their information into a tablet placed on the altar and sits down on a cushion, a gentle voice belonging to a middle-aged woman speaks: "I am an existence beyond human comprehension. What I know far surpasses your knowledge, and I see the future. Ask if you have any questions."

The KAIST team stated that the AI temple provides fortune-telling and divination services based on traditional Shamanistic concepts.

The client enters their full name, date of birth, and occupation, and ShamAIn will provide a specific answer.

According to the research team, many people initially approach ShamAIn out of curiosity, but later discover they can share personal anxieties during the fortune-telling process.

Professor Nam said his team is focused on training super-intelligent AI wizards who can interact with humans.

"We found that AI has the potential to function not just as a tool, but as an entity that can influence human judgment and emotions," the professor said.

ShamAIn is not the first AI fortune teller to launch in South Korea. The country already has numerous AI-based fortune-telling services that have attracted considerable interest from young people.

Besides using personal information, some services also rely on data about blood type, physiognomy, and personality traits of the person seeking a fortune telling to predict their destiny.
