Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia is suspected of being involved in numerous financial and bribery scandals. |
Argentinian football is facing a major shock as President Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia has been indicted in a serious economic crime case.
The decision was made by an Argentinian court, which also imposed asset freezes on the Argentinian Football Federation and the individuals involved.
Specifically, Tapia and treasurer Pablo Toviggino were prosecuted and had 350 million Argentine pesos, equivalent to approximately 217,000 euros, frozen. The case is part of an investigation into alleged "misappropriation of social security funds".
According to the judge's ruling, although not detained, Tapia is currently not allowed to leave Argentina except in special cases for work purposes and with permission. This is seen as a significant restriction for the head of the AFA during this sensitive period.
The incident stemmed from a complaint filed with the Argentine Customs and Taxation Agency (ARCA), which alleged unpaid debts totaling 19 trillion pesos, equivalent to approximately 11.8 million euros.
The investigating authorities believe that the AFA, as a legal entity, also bears responsibility in this case. The decision to prosecute therefore not only targets individual leaders but also directly affects the governing body of Argentine football.
Notably, the developments occurred just one day after Tapia celebrated his ninth anniversary in power at the AFA. Prior to this, he had denied all allegations, asserting that no wrongdoing had occurred during his tenure.
The incident is attracting significant public attention in Argentina, as it not only involves legal issues but also directly impacts the image and reputation of the football nation, which is currently the reigning World Cup champion.
