In a series of auctions in London (England) at the end of June, Sotheby's will auction off Amedeo Modigliani's painting "Nu assis au collier ." The auction will also feature portraits from the collection of British billionaire Joe Lewis, former owner of Tottenham Hotspur football club.
Nu assis au collier is currently estimated to be worth around $60.6 million, according to Artnews. Created in 1917, the work is one of the few remaining from the artist's exhibition that opened in December 1917.

The painting depicting a naked woman wearing a necklace was the focal point of the event. The artwork led to the exhibition being shut down by authorities on the grounds that it promoted indecent and overly suggestive paintings.
Oliver Barker, chairman of Sotheby's Europe, revealed that he had known about the painting for a long time, always admired it, and wished to have it put up for auction.
When the painting first appeared on the market, Modigliani's popularity was at its peak. Nu assis au collier is Modigliani's most sought-after nude painting. The president of Sotheby's Europe stated that the artist had no intention of painting obscenely, but only tried to shock viewers.
Art consultant Megan Fox Kelly argues that truly significant works by Modigliani are not frequently seen on the market. The fact that they are occasionally put up for auction might lead people to believe that the opportunity to own one is quite common, but that's not actually the case.
Modigliani's works demonstrate an artist's willingness to stand up to and challenge aesthetic conventions, and the painting of the nude woman wearing a necklace is a prime example. Before his death, Modigliani painted over 300 paintings, about 30-35 of which were nudes.
He also owns one of the most expensive paintings in the art world today - Nu Couché (Reclining Nude, 1917) - which was purchased for $170.4 million (nearly 4 trillion VND) in 2015.

Born into a poor family in 1884, Amedeo Modigliani grew up in the port city of Livorno (Italy). When he first began painting, he received little attention. The exhibition he held in 1917, which was closed, was also his first and last.
In January 1920, Modigliani began coughing up blood and was diagnosed with meningitis as a complication of pulmonary tuberculosis. On January 24, 1920, Modigliani died at the age of 35.
Modigliani was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, France. Within just a few years, Modigliani's paintings began selling for high prices, skyrocketing over time.
