In Xuan Nha, while researching the model of raising green carp, we were introduced to the family of Mr. Ngan Van Thiet in Chieng Hin village – one of the pioneering families in raising green carp and now successfully implementing this model. Taking us on a tour of his family's green carp ponds, Mr. Thiet shared: "Previously, green carp in Xuan Nha were mainly caught naturally from the Quanh stream flowing through the commune, with commercial prices ranging from 500,000 to 600,000 VND/kg. Recognizing this as a fish with high economic value, I started catching fingerlings from the stream to raise in my ponds. The most important condition for raising green carp is a clean water source; the fish ponds must be designed for constant water flow in and out. Only then will the fish be healthy, grow well, and produce delicious, flavorful meat."
Currently, Mr. Thiet's family has two ponds for raising fish fry, each about 200 m², and one pond of 4,000 m² for raising green catfish. By selling both fish fry and mature fish, his family earns nearly 400 million VND per year.
Recognizing the effectiveness of Mr. Ngan Van Thiet's family's model of raising green carp, many households in the commune have come to learn from his experience and replicate the model. Ms. Ha Thi Hue , from Pu Lau village, Xuan Nha commune, shared: "Previously, my family only raised green carp for consumption, but since this species has become popular, my family has invested in the business for nearly 3 years now. In addition to our pond area of over 500 m², I also buy fish from other households in the commune to sell, and I buy small fingerlings to raise and sell to households inside and outside the commune that need them. Each year, my family earns nearly 150 million VND."
Green carp are slow-growing fish, taking about 3-5 years to reach 2-3 kg. They are also very easy to raise, requiring only clean water and a continuous flow. Their main food consists of grass, vegetables, rice bran, etc. Green carp have a slender body; when young, their scales are green, but when they reach 2 kg or more, their scales and fins develop red stripes. Currently, this fish is very popular because of its delicious, firm flesh and, especially, its lack of a fishy smell. It can be prepared in many delicious dishes, such as salads, grilled, and sour soup. In addition, many people buy them as ornamental fish. Commercially sold fish cost between 250,000 and 300,000 VND per kilogram.
Currently, Xuan Nha commune has over 500 households raising green carp with a total pond area of over 25 hectares, concentrated mainly in the villages of Tun, Na Hieng, Chieng Hin, Na Lua, and Pu Lau. According to the fish farmers, although it is a wild species, green carp raised in ponds have a survival rate of over 90%, are less susceptible to disease, and their main food source is vegetables, grass, and agricultural by-products.
Ms. Dinh Thi Thu, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Xuan Nha Commune, said: "Green carp is bringing high economic efficiency to the people. Currently, besides some households developing green carp farming for business, many households still only raise them to provide food for their families. In the coming time, the commune will promote the economic efficiency of green carp farming; leverage the advantages of climate and water resources suitable for this native fish species, helping people develop their economy."
The model of raising green catfish in Xuan Nha has shown potential for economic development, opening up new avenues and increasing income for the people. This model needs investment and replication.
