The bold choice of expressive language and the thorough exploitation of folk material have made the work an interesting example in the creative story of theater today.
Fairy tales, puppetry, and bamboo are all familiar to generations of theater audiences, but when combined in "Tam Cam," they are brought to life in a very modern way. Bamboo is no longer just a material but plays the role of a character evoking "visual memories": bamboo creates the stage scenery, bamboo shapes the characters. Through the performance, the audience is led through a museum of emotions of the Northern Vietnamese countryside – a place associated with bamboo groves, fairy tales, and springtime puppet shows.
Furthermore, the performance also boasts significant strengths in combining traditional elements with modern theatrical language. The multi-tiered stage design, a stark contrast to traditional puppet theater, demonstrates a bold and experimental approach. The creative team skillfully transformed traditional storytelling into a modern stage with many suggestive elements, emphasizing the transmission of messages through visual imagery and multi-layered storytelling across different stage levels. The use of traditional Vietnamese opera (chèo) as a narrative thread also creates a modern dialogue between various traditional art forms on a single stage.
For a long time, finding a direction for the stage, even for those proudly "open year-round" like the Thang Long Puppet Theatre, has been a constant concern for generations of artists. In this journey, it's easy to see that returning to and fully exploiting traditional folk cultural values always yields unexpected results. And through "Tam Cam," the public recognizes even more clearly the potential for development in Vietnamese theatrical art in telling a deeply traditional story with a modern approach. Traditional theater in general, and puppet art in particular, desperately need platforms to experiment, to create to the fullest, and to captivate today's audience.
