Overview of ginger

According to Traditional Medicine Practitioner Bui Dac Sang of the Hanoi Traditional Medicine Association, ginger is a perennial herbaceous plant with a fleshy rhizome that branches out like a hand, bearing many shoots from which stems reach 80-100 cm in height. The leaves are lance-shaped, 20-30 cm long, and grow upright. The flowers are yellowish-green with purple edges, and the fruit is a berry.

Ginger originates from India and Malaysia and is now found in all tropical countries. In Vietnam, ginger is grown everywhere. Even during the time of the Hung Kings (2879-287 BC), our ancestors used ginger with meat such as birds, fish, and turtles to ward off cold and aid digestion. Since then, people have known to use ginger, onions, garlic, chili peppers, and perilla leaves as daily spices to prevent illness.

Ginger contains 2-3% essential oil, 5% resin, 3.7% fat, starch, and pungent substances (Zingerone, Zingerol, Sogal). Fresh ginger (sinh khương) is spicy, slightly warm in nature, and has the effect of combating cold, expelling phlegm, preventing vomiting, and aiding digestion. Roasted ginger (thán khương) treats cold stomach pain and diarrhea. Dried ginger (can khương) has the effect of dispelling cold and treating colds and diarrhea. Ginger peel (khương bì) has the effect of reducing edema (diuretic).

In traditional Chinese medicine, ginger is an ingredient in many remedies for treating colds, expelling phlegm, relieving coughs, and relieving stomach aches.
