Many students are unable to graduate from university on time due to failing to meet the required graduation standards.
Delayed graduation due to failure to meet output standards.
There are many reasons why students have to delay their graduation, such as failing courses, lacking the required foreign language certificates, or not having completed their graduation thesis. Meanwhile, witnessing classmates graduate is something that makes students feel both sad and pressured.
Tuan Anh Vu, a fourth-year student at the University of Economics and Law (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), felt pressured because he graduated later than his classmates due to submitting his English certificate late. The student shared: “After finishing the program, my classmates have all found internships and even started working at law firms. Meanwhile, I haven't completed the English proficiency requirement, so instead of working, I have to study English, which puts a lot of pressure on me.”
"We all want to be independent and financially self-sufficient, but to achieve that, we need a job. At that point, I had to learn English to meet the required standards and also think about what kind of job I should pursue," the male student confided.
Similarly, NTT, a fourth-year student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), also faced difficulties in obtaining a foreign language certificate. NTT shared: “Currently, I haven't graduated yet compared to my peers, which affects my morale to some extent, as my friends have all found jobs already. Honestly, not graduating on time affects many aspects of life, from employment and family to the career paths I had planned.”
Only students with a degree or awaiting graduation will be accepted.
In reality, many students with bachelor's degrees still face difficulties finding jobs, making it even harder for those without degrees. NTT confided: "I applied to many places, but they all required graduates or those waiting for their degrees. I felt pressured financially, and my family asked a lot of questions. I felt a bit insecure when talking about this."
DTN (a 5th-year student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry) feels pressured because her older siblings are all excellent students who have found stable jobs after graduation. Meanwhile, she hasn't graduated yet because she finished her thesis late, and her part-time job pays low wages, barely enough to cover living expenses, rent, transportation, and daily food costs...
TN added: “Since I studied engineering, all the projects require full qualifications and certifications before they can operate; they don't accept students waiting for their degrees or who haven't graduated yet. My family wants me to pursue lighter, higher-paying office jobs, but my current qualifications don't meet the requirements.”
"The biggest pressure comes from economic factors. The goal of graduating is to earn money, and to support a family, you need money," TN shared.
Solutions to overcome pressure
According to Master Lam Hoang Duc, a lecturer in the Psychology Department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City, the two types of pressure that students will face the most are peer pressure and pressure from society.
"Society always expects you to have a stable job after graduation, earn money to support yourself and help your family. You will have uncertainties about your career, your direction, and most importantly, you won't have a clear image of yourself in the job or profession you want to pursue. These feelings of uncertainty, coupled with the fear that others might be more successful than you, create immense pressure," said Master Lam Hoang Duc.
Offering psychological solutions, Master Duc stated that what can be done is to train students in time management skills, stress management, self-image identification, self-direction, and how to work and confront their unfinished business. The rest depends on the students' efforts, desire for change, and personal development.
