How to read football scores in English

VnExpressVnExpress15/09/2023

When a team wins after a penalty shootout, we say they "won on penalties," but to say the specific score, the simpler way is to use "win" and "lose" followed by numbers.

In sports , a match in a tournament is generally called a "match," while a friendly match is called a "friendly match."

If an athlete or team has a winning streak, it's called a "winning streak" or "hot streak": Vietnam maintained its winning streak after the friendly match with Palestine yesterday.

Conversely, if they lose several matches in a row, it can be called a "losing streak": The defeat last night continued her losing streak.

To indicate a team's win or loss by a certain score, a simple way is to use the words "win" and "lose" followed by numbers. Specifically, if the score includes a zero, English doesn't use "zero" but rather "nil".

Example: Palestine lost the match two-nil (Palestine lost the match with a score of 2-0).

Barcelona won nine-0 in the match with Luxembourg last night.

To express it in a more formal way, we could say "Barcelona won by nine goals to nil".

In the case of a draw, simply replace "win" or "lose" with "draw": Vietnam drew two-two with Thailand / Vietnam and Thailand drew two-two in the final match of the 2022 AFF Cup (Vietnam and Thailand drew 2-2 in the final match of the 2022 AFF Cup).

If a team wins after a penalty shootout, we say they "won on penalties".

A match played at home is called a "home game," while a match played away is called an "away game." Similarly, the home team is the "home team," and the away team is the "away team."

Example: They lost one home game but won both away games.

According to statistics, Manchester United have never lost a home game after leading at half-time since 1984.
